    Mahle gas burners original surface finish

    Hi.

    I am chasing a set of MGB with silver spokes on satin black for my 1973 targa. After discussing with Al Reed I realize that such wheels will have to be made from aluminum, not magnesium (to obtain the "silver" surface). Fine by me, but can someone verify whether (15") Gas Burners delivered in 1973 were aluminum rather than magnesium, and whether they could be delivered with the finish I am after? A vintage picture or period written documentation to confirm would be very welcome.

    AFAIK original gas burners were magnesium alloy throughout their production. Why not simply have Mr. Reed refinish a set to your specifications?

    Surely you know that aluminum repops are readily available (cheap) in the finish you want.

    The Mahle "gas burners" only came in 15 X 5 1/2" and were made in 70 and 71. Not made in 73.

    Ed, I've got a picture of a Tourist Delivery order sheet said to be for 1972 models, that appears to show gas burners as an option for 911T only. Option 485, described as "Pressure Cast Alloy Wheels, 5½ J x 15"

    They well may have been available into 72 as an option, but generally I don't remember ever having seen them after 71, but as we know, with Porsche anything is possible. However without checking my parts books I'm sure they were not available in 73. The ATS 6 X 15 "cookie cutters" were the low cost alloy option at that time.

    Because magnesium can not be polished/anodized for the silver look. Given that the MGB never came in an aluminum version, the spokes must have been painted grey. I will have to talk with Mr Reed again.

    I certainly do. Heavy, and with terrible quality. Also, they fit VW bolt circle, not Porsche.

    Yes, it is hard to imagine. That is just 4 USD more pr seat than picking the leather cover for the steering wheel!

    Factory 72/73 parts book only illustrates and has listings for the steel wheel and 5 spoke FUCHS.

    Well. These are new cars leaving the factory in 1973.
