Is the jack or tow hook in the way? Looks like you need to slide the spare tire end closet to the front of the car under the latch box first.

if your car would be a 64-67 (its not... right?)i`d say it`s the bracket i marked with the arrow...i think with the introduction of the 15x 5.5" fuchs rims this reinforcement bracket changed to an asymetrical type to give more space to slide the wheel in.....but i have seen exeptions on LWB´s for what ever reason.any close up pics of this area?
slam panel replaced?
i`d try to loosen the 3 bolts that retain the fuel tank and try to push the tank back --maybe it slides a few mill and BINGO
I have absolutely no thoughts on this subject. Sorry. I'm just happy that I'm not the only one that weird s**t happens to.

+1....something has changed...might remove the tire and take another photo - I'm guessing fuel tank, as I've had three early cars with original - or original dimension - fuel tanks with 185/70/15 spares with no fitment issues at all.Originally Posted by Arne

This happened with Vredesteins on our old VW bus... the overall diameter was too large to fit the spare tire well.
In your case, 185/70 x 15 CN36's are 24.88" OD, the Vreds are 25.20". A mere 1/2" difference, but it's enough.

You could try deflating it. Might still be a snug fit since steel belted tires don't grow that much when inflated.
I haven't been much of a fan of Vredsteins for quite some time, this would be yet another reason to pony up for the CN36 or XWX.
