    Silver for '72 - 925 vs. 936

    Curiosity here, way before I need to know.

    I know that early '72 silver cars were code 925, and later in the year and on into '73 the code changed to 936. Do we know what the difference was? Was there an actual change in color/shade/tint? Or was it a change in type/process of painting?

    Bumping this question, now that the car is in primer and being blocked. I'm going to have to pick a color soon.

    this is from the workshop books (I think)
    it shows the date change of 925 to 926 and refers to 936 as "V W Metallic Silver" whatever that means I cant help with formulas though
    note they changed the gold at the same time. It may have been a real change or may have been a budgetary issue

    I went through this excercise with the repainting of my 2.2 S ten years ago
    IIRC the 936 silver has a shade more black than the 925
    no mixtures comparisons - just a visual observation

    Back then silver color had a problem with its metallic coating (2-stage color) , which went yellow over the years.
    By 1972, they probably changed the formula.
    I have a document from 1972 where Porsche adressed the proplem to dealers and how to repaint cars.

    All of this makes sense. Hugh's date of change document matches the car -- 936 started on 2 Sep., my car was an 8/71 build with 925 on the tag.

    And under all the red, much of the original color was intensely yellowed.

    Going to pay a visit to the paint jobber later this week, to look at silver samples.

    This is the document from 1972 (i currently dont have it, part of the literature project im doing with Author Maeder)
    A 5 page manual for dealers how to „repair” the 2-stage metallic (silver) colors on cars, since the clear coat went yellow after a few years of selling a new car.

    You know, as a kid I recall the silver and gold metallic VW Bugs of the early '70s sitting on the local dealer's lot. I remember thinking that I'd never seen paint so vibrant and striking. No wonder Porsche adopted that when they had to change.

    As an aside silver was the most commonly specified colour on British market 911. Both 72 and 73. Don't have for 70. Somewhere I have an importer document a giving a breakdown of the percentage prepared for a UK dealer meeting..I comment because if here was a quality issue then in this market it might've affected a highish percent of cars sold. Not sure if that pattern repeated worldwide.Though less sunshine here than some geographies

    Don't have formulation change details do just s context comment.

    Just got back from the paint jobber. Looks like Glasurit does not have a formula for 925 any longer, specifies 936 for '70-86 or so. Axalta (formerly Dupont) lists formulas for both 925 & 936, and they are exactly the same.
