Black overspray was fairly sloppy as shown by this 1969 Karmann example:

The door edges I was referring too were the inside edges, around the door upolstery panel. You never saw body color from inside when the door was shut.

I am guessing from Frank T’s recent post that this information is incorrect regarding the color of the floor bottom. I had assumed that the bottom of the floor was body color in 1970. When I reviewed the 700 mile original S photos, the floor also seem to be the same color as the body. It seems, from recent information posted by Frank T, that this is not correct and that the bottom of the floor should be that grayish color for 1970 MY cars.

My 70 E project is nearly complete and just awaiting the engine. The floor is body color. Not sure I want to take everything apart to repaint the floor at this point. Anybody have any suggestions for the correct color for the floor?

When reviewing the 700 mile car there are several photos of the underside ......
You can also see the fuel tank and underside in a few of the photos...
As you see the fuel tank is definitely a dark grey and the underfloor is not really a grey tone it’s more of a beige than grey.
I will take a photo of a 70 &71 floor section in the shop and post later this morning
    Thanks for continuing this discussion

    Underbody

Guys here are photos ...sorry the first photo upside down...
The group photo shows original floors from 70 ( the largest piece of metal) a 71 (smaller)
Also are some grey materials ,raw sheet metal and 2 variations of grey spray paint.
Trying to provide clear examples of grey and beige tones.
Seems way more beige than grey (the 71 underfloor is way more dirty the the 70 coming from Arizona)
The 70 floor section also shows where sanded the sequence of applications

    - darker grey first coat followed by whiteish then beige type finish (assume all separate applications).
    - also notice the orange ( car color) showing at edges

As been stated on many previous posts the body color was painted over the base coats and primers , no real masking to inside floor and wheel wells ....seems the beige coating was applied to underside then black was applied to the wheel wells ,rear engine area with some overspray to the beige underfloor

These panels seem consistent with the 700 mile and recent original owner 71 for sale.
My intent was the try to further clarify underfloor finishes for 70 & 71 ....not saying there may not be other variations for these years depending on mfg. dates .

Looking at my 73 (aubergine) underside seems to me they omitted the black coating (except below the longitudinal?) step sometime in 72 or so as the other coatings and body color applications are the same.

Thanks for additional discussion on these years

    All very interesting, thanks.
Still is not completely clear when effectively Karmann stopped painting the front trunk and the bonnets hinges in black.
There is no any specific information about this in relation to the Karmann-built cars only?
    Kind regards,
