    long-term restoration of '71 targa

I recently picked up a long-term project, a '71 T targa. Although it's currently wearing a black rattlecan or Earl Sheib paint job, the original conda green paint is hiding underneath. Thankfully the paint code confirms that it was originally conda. The engine and transmission are supposedly original (the numbers are within the correct range), but they've both been out of the car for at least the past decade. The car had been sitting in a garage for the last 13 years because the previous owner started to rebuild the engine.... The last emissions sticker on the windshield is another ten years older. I'm sure some parts went missing in that time and I haven't fully cataloged everything yet. So, the bad news is that it's a non-running project with crap paint exterior, "updated" interior and virtually no paperwork. The good news is that it's (likely) a numbers-matching conda green targa and I have found very little rust. Also, it's a 5 speed and seems to have the comfort equipment/appearance package. I've been looking for a long-term restoration project for a while and this one fits the bill. I still need to finish a bunch of projects around the house (including adding workspace to my garage) before I can start serious work on the car. So in the meantime, I have a while - actually a lot of time - to collect parts and info.

First up: I need to order a new compliance decal for the doorjamb because the original is long gone. (!) I need help to figure out the build date for the decal. My car is 9111111015 and I have narrowed the date to 11/70 to 01/71.
Can anyone with a similar vin let me know their vin and build date? PM if you don't want to post here.

Here it is patiently waiting in a friend's garage

My 71 ends in ....00966 and COA says 12/70 , so yours would be later by around 49 cars .
Not sure what daily production was the. But it will be eithe 12/70 or 1/71.

Thanks for narrowing my build date range! I was wondering what effect Christmas had on production: if they were taking half of the month off, does that mean there are relatively few 12/70 cars? making it more likely that mine is 1/71?

Great project. A conda green targa will look fantastic. Look forward to seeing it.

Thanks Noah. I hope you have lots of patience!
minor update - but, nonetheless, a milestone. Thanks to data points from a couple of registry members plus some internet sleuthing, I've determined that the build date is 11/70. VIN decal can now be ordered. It may be a bit premature because I haven't even started any physical work on it yet. But, in my experience you should get things like this while they're available because you never know if the production stops, the source disappears, etc by the time you actually need them.

It's been a while since I posted any updates.
I brought the car home about a 18months ago when I lost my storage space. Although I was still working on the garage and house remodel, I did spend some time inspecting and disassembling the car. Here it is not long after arriving in the garage

I was worried about the floor pan and back seat floors but I found only surface rust when pulled and scraped the sound deadening. Here it is just before the scraping began

I broke down and bought a body cart rather than make one. I probably should have cut down the supports because the body is sitting almost 3' up.

I'm pulling the wiring and fuel and hydraulic lines now. With some luck, the body should be ready for body and paint by the end of the month

Ah this is great to see... I have just started a restoration of my 1971 Conda green T coupe. Your car looks to be in really decent shape; a great base. Your car looks very rust free, which alas mine is not. I'll be keen to see your motor build as I also plan to squeeze a few extra horses from my motor... I have some E 2.2 P&C's and Webers.
