    Intermediate Shaft Question

This is a pic of intermediate shaft on a 1970 2.2L engine. The central threaded/tapped portion behind the cir-clip 'floats' approx. 1/6" (2mm) back & forth.
Is there a missing bolt for this piece? If it is a missing bolt, there seems to be no surface or anything for it to react against. I could not find anything in the PET about it.
Should I be worried about this axial float or should I just clean the area & replace the gasket, bolt it back up & have a brewski?

    Cheers

That sure seems like a lot of sludge and dirt there, what oil are you using and how often do you change it?

That is normal. 6mm threaded hole is for removing the plug for cleaning after snap ring is removed. I WOULDN'T remove plug and clean while engine is assembled.

    Hey David

This engine hasn't been lit for over 24 yrs. I purchased the car as a non running project. The gunk you see was before I started cleaning things up. The photo makes it appear far worse than in reality.
In actual fact when I dropped the engine (& transmission) I was pleasantly surprised to see how clean the valve trains & chain drives were. I have been addressing the usual suspects; oil leaks,
upgrading to rebuilt 930 tensioners, re-bushed idler sprocket arms, chain ramps, gaskets, O-rings & all that other good stuff, amongst other upgrades. I just couldn't seem to find a definitive answer
to my question before posting here. Thanks guys - now for that 'brewski'

    Cheers
