    Gas Tank Differences

Looking to replace the gas tank on a 1966 911 as it is looking beyond repair. Can someone school me on what is correct for a '66 and/or the differences through the years (I assume there was changes made. I'd also appreciate any one's experience with repro tanks, just the standard size tank, not the 110L version or plastic versions.

    Thanks in advance

I might've jumped the gun on posting this as I just went to Brett Johnson's Restorers Guide to Authenticity where it states "the fuel tanks on all 911 and 912 models were fundamentally the same." It then states that they were originally painted grey until mid-65 when it changed to a textured finish, also grey.

But he also says there were "only two changes in the tank itself. At the 1969 model year both the 62 and 100-litre tanks were modified". However it is not clear what the modifications were. I understand there's tanks with an without baffles for certain years, but I was more concerned with the external appearance.

I'm still interested in experiences with repro tanks. SM notes that the Dansk tank ($400) bottom profile differs slightly from the original (but fails to show a pic of the bottom profile), and that an original tank is $1957.55 (to be precise!). Restoration Design also has a tank, but I'm not sure if it is a part they have made or whether it is from another supplier.

Since you are interested in the external appearance, there is a difference in tanks that are available versus original. The grey one is an original tank from 1965 - notice the full dome. Whereas, the black tank is a reproduction, advertised as appropriate for 65-73 - notice the slant side of the dome. Don't know if the change appeared only in the reproductions or whether it was a change in original equipment. Nor do I know when the change occurred.

I have only seen repros made with slant sides, not sure if someone makes one with a full dome yet.

Anyone know what the slant was intended to accommodate? Was it to minimize denting the front of the dome when re-installing the spare (something that happened to my dome)?

I believe the slant was added to facilitate removing and installing the spare tire
