Most of the time, I do my best to just stay outta the way --- meaning . . .

    . . . 'slower traffic keep right'

Basic highway etiquette, I've always thought. But nobody drives like that --- 'cept, me, seems

And in CA, if you're doing 70 mph --- anywhere . . . you're prolly holding somebody up

Considering how much I'm spending on fuel these days, I'm definitely one of the slower drivers out there . . . pushing-up my mpg. But the absolute last thing I wanna do is be in someone else's way . . . we all know how frustrating that can be

    So . . .

    . . . I watch the traffic, watch the conditions, watch my mirrors . . .

. . . and stay to the right

    Put it Another Way . . .

    . . . I can't control someone else's 'stupid' or 'rude' . . .

    . . . only my own

I'm fairly sure the fella saw the interstate as some kind of personal autobahn, where he picked whatever speed suited him, and after that was entitled to have an open lane in order to blow past everyone.. That may be how it's done in Europe, but it's not exactly how freeways operate here. Ex., If you're at 70mph and going past a string of slower cars at 55, it's reasonabe to expect 4 - 10 seconds depending on conditions. Just because some guy prefers 85 or > doesn't mean you must abide that person in such a hurried manner..or need to careen over to the right.

No one wants to sit behind the lethargic driver doing 57 mph as he overtakes others, perhaps needing minutes to complete their pass. A 15 mph spread is acceptable. If that's doesn't cut it, the last thing you should do is take offense or knashing your teeth because a person cleared the lane for you.

on a related topic RE passing and etiquette

one of my top pet peeves is when someone wants to pass you on the right SO THEY CAN SQUEEZE IN BETWEEN YOU THE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF YOU WHILE NOW DEPRIVING YOU OF ROOM FOR BRAKING

I don't tailgate, but I don't leave excessive gaps either...and as far as I'm concerned, that space immediately in front of me is MINE....just enough for safety; that space belongs to whomever it is immediately in front of...probably two car lengths worth or so

and yet bad drivers eff this up all the time

    You guys crack me up.

On the road everyone believes their personal schedule and interests usurp everyone else’s. It’s every man and idiotic teenage girl for themselves. Deal with it and don’t get so offended that people are by nature dumbasses. (Candidly I will admit that some days it seems that there is a moron convention in town and I got stuck in that traffic.)

And if you insist on believing it’s sooo bad out there try driving a semi for a while. If you thought you’ve seen STUPID and RUDE before, just wait.
Warning! If I crap on you itís not on purpose.

Frank, you are correct RE semis, even though I've driven one. But I'm on a bus into NYC every day and stopped sitting up front...I don't know how the bus drivers deal with the stupid moves I've seen.

I also have my countermoves when those events happen, but I'd rather not publish them. It's just a pet peeve -- my pulse never rises.

    Countermoves...

Itís not surprising how easy it is to manipulate other drivers using their own egos against them.

One of the joys of pulling a travel trailer is discovering how pleasant it is to drive slowly. Itís spread to my everyday driving and I donít give a damn whatís going on around me. In California Iíd probably be leaving a trail of wreckage behind me, but here in Oregon it works out great.

One sign that we have a great culture here in Central Oregon: people do the alternating weave at merges. If we start to lose that and the middle fingers start to come up weíll know that things are starting to slide.

P.S. Hereís a story apropos of nothing. I spent most of my later teenage years in Newport Beach in SoCal. One day I got on the recently constructed 405 and immediately panicked. There wasnít another car in sight! I thought that it hadnít opened yet. Hard to imagine, huh?

I had a ‘56 Chevy hot rod back in the day in SoCal. Even then folks were tailgating and it was very much a pet peeve. I wired my brake lights to a toggle switch on the dash which many times got their immediate attention.
