CA Blue Plate re-registraton contacts / help?

Hey there -looking for a registration service or savvy person who can help me or guide on registering a blue plate back to the car.
I have the plate in hand.
I have registration papers and documents with the vin and the blue plate on it.
Car left the state for a few years, and registered with out of state plate
Back in CA now, but, have a new plate on it, as the DMV person didn't seem interested to figure out how to register the old plate back to it.

    Any assist appreciated!

    Thanks

    Hi,

Some friendly advice. Call your local AAA office and ask them if they can handle your specific problem. If so it's well worth the $60 annual fee to join rather than dealing with the chaos at the DMV. I recently registered my 993 which had been off the road for 10 years. I joined AAA and they had me in and out in 20 minutes with registration in hand. I will never stand in line at the DMV again.

Yeah thanks for the referral, I have AAA and will go down there too and talk to them. I've found them fantastic, but for sometimes obscure stuff... they have trouble.

Paint the plate they gave you blue. No one's going to care or even know you painted it if you do a nice job in the correct blue. It's not like you're altering a plate to get away with something like registration or a stolen vehicle.

You can reassign a pair of matching plates to a car if it’s the correct model year range but I think you’ll have to go down to the actual dmv and do it.

Hoping to be helpful, if I understand your question.
I filled out a form for blue plates, printed it from dmv website.
I took form to dmv, with two “matching” blue plates in my hands, correct for 1971, with a 71 sticker on it.
    One plate will not work.
(I had to hammer, weld, sandblast, one plate and paint it blue, it was so rusty and bent up)
They did not care, or even notice it was painted.
They charged about $40, looked at the plates, took the form, I signed it, they signed it.
And a month later they sent me a printed registration paper.

I didn’t confuse them by telling them anything....not my story, where the plates came from, where they we going, nothing.
Some of it was on the form....

There program is called YOM, year of manufacturer
The dmv is very clear on what plate they will accept for what year and what car, on the form or website.
But you have to read it two or three times.

    Current long term ownership: 63 Cab, 71 911, 74 914

^This. A Carrera RS in the SF area has blue plates- not original to the car. The owner said he bought the plates on Ebay. Even the year stickers are being reproduced. He filled out the form and DMV assigned the plates to his car, no questions.

There may be two ways of getting those blue plates back on your car.
    1. Restoring the Original Plates
    2. Year of Manufacture Plates

    Restoring the Original Plates

Once upon a time--before the yellow on black plates were included in the Year of Manufacture License Plate Program--some folks did succeed in getting their cars original yellow on black plates reinstated by the DMV. Maybe it can still happen. You could just keep going back to the DMV until you find someone to help you. Believe it or not, the vast majority of the folks I've dealt with at the DMV have been friendly and helpful. Sometimes bureaucrats enjoy doing something different (if it doesn't mean they have to work 10 times as hard to make a daily quote after spending time with you).

There is the little drawback of spending the whole day at the DMV hoping the person you draw can and will help...

You probably need a registration service or even a lawyer. Some time back, a friend highly recommended Diane at Tony's Registration Service in Monrovia (contact information on their Facebook page).

Or, you could call around to Auto Registration Services till somebody sounds competent or try the AAA.

    Year of Manufacture Plates

The easy way is probably to get the Yellow on Blue plates put on your car through the DMV's Year of Manufacture (YoM) program. The fact that those plates were once on your car doesn't matter one way or another. The YoM program was expanded to cover Yellow on Blue plates almost in secret, but those plates are listed on the form. See https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/de...rms/reg/reg352

You can not do this through the AAA--the DMV has to "inspect" your plates. You need to bring:
    1. Form REG 352 (Rev 1/2017)
    2. Both license plates
    3. A sticker for the year of your car

There are lots of sources for the year sticker. There's Google, also:

I should warn you that the Year of Manufacture program doesn't always go smoothly. Something like 2004 I got the Black on Yellow YoM plates on my 356A easily enough but the Yellow on Black plates for the 911 and VW took FIVE visits to the DMV! Those visits aren't optional--you get temporary plates when you come in with the form, plates, and sticker. If Sacramento doesn't perform you have to go back to the DMV to renew the temporary plates.
