That's exactly what happened to me. I have perfect blue/yellow plates that were on my 356 (kept them when selling the car in another state) and wanted those on my 911 (correct year). DMV refused because technically the plates are still associated with the 356 (under my name no less in california) - never mind that the car was sold in FL 15y ago and my name is on the record - you'd think that's a perfect situation. Nope. Disappointing...

    Is that still operative today?

I do know that the new (as of 2017) application for YoM plates includes

"12. If you wish to retain YOM plates that are assigned to a vehicle in which the vehicle is not currently registered, a retention fee is due each year."

Maybe the State of California has discovered a new way to charge fees which has the side-effect of freeing old license plate numbers.

Well this process is confusing. It seems sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So guess I just have to give it a go and see what happens. But a pair of plates is a requirement.

I just remembered something, the plate on the car int he old picture above. Well, that IS active I think. When I registered the car, the registration service said they could see the plate tied to the car. Now, I have since tied a new plate to the car, so maybe it's gone? I don't know. But I do recall her saying that, she tried to get it registered to the car and DMV told her "nope".

REAL ID... so I did my application in October when my license expired. They said - get license in 2-3 weeks. 2-3 MONTHS go by ( I travel a lot so using passport for that ...) and I call DMV, wait on hold for 2 hours. Finally get a fairly helpful person who says "hmm.... looks like a delay or some glitch" and says "will send you an updated temporary license". A week later I get the REAL ID in the mail.

My wife, she does this in April this year. She got hers 2 weeks later.

Just make sure you bring the right documentation the first time.

These came off my '67 S which sat in a warehouse from 1980 to 2008, and it won't be going back to California anytime soon.
Wow, that's super generous. PM sent.

I just met this guy this morning at a local Cars & Coffee...

He is supposed to be the go to person for plates … and supposedly can answer your questions.

I have not had to use his service, but word of mouth is good...

    Hope this helps,

Spyrex, if you can register 1976 tags on your 1970 car, you're welcome to them (pm replied)... if not, another poster here could use them. I'll forward his contact info, please send to him if you're unable to use them.

This thread has provided a clearer understanding (for me) about the desirability of California black plate cars, and the YOM methods of the state. Florida's are waaay simpler, as the tag/vehicle data isn't saved the same way.

Deal. Will give your plates a shot. If no go, I’ll pass them to the other poster/member.
    Thanks again, wish me luck.

Huge thanks to Russ. Got the plates yesterday and they are minty! Will be calling DMV to ensure cleared and making an attempt over the next couple weeks. If I fail... will pass these along / for another to give a go or back to Russ to keep with his car.

    Thanks again!

My "Real ID" came today--10 calendar days after my visit to the Rancho Cucamonga DMV. I won't need to stuff the three pages of temporary driver's license into my wallet.

The DMV was almost empty: maybe 15-20 people without appointments. Makes me wonder why the soonest I could make that appointment was at least a month after the day I logged on to get the appointment. The DMV folks weren't as friendly as when I made the series of visits for my black YoM plates. Not mean--just indifferent.

Hi All - I just completed this process and used a great service. Only $50

Skeet Pearson is the owner and she is a kick! She also helped me register my 71T out of an estate sale, which cost a bit more but was very much worth every penny.

I bought the cleared plates from finishyourplates.com, great service there too!
