Parts Classifieds beginning to look like Craigslist

Imagine if all of us started advertising every single insignificant part we own. Tens of thousands of items that no one cares about.

Eventually people would check out because they’re bored and tired of weeding through a forest of meaningless large print ads.

Already there. Moreover, trying to list something is so ridiculous. Within a day you are on page three thanks to the bump/price lowering fanatic who can't seem to list his items for the amount he actually wants. I guess the "desert landscape" is full of parts too.

Parts are sooooo slow right now. 2 years ago, the insignificant crap sold instantly. A box of rusted and clapped out nuts and bolts sold as gold for only God knows why. These days I've been trying to peddle an NOS tool kit for the last two months for half the value because nobody is buying. I've got a set of fairly nice original 71/72 seats that would've been an easy sell even a year ago but nothings movin right now. Thank God the VW guys are buyin still otherwise the MRS. would be questioning my "hobby."

Most are selling over on Pelican. Lots of activity over there for parts. Myself and the shops like Rothsport have more work then ever.

Okay... I'll admit it. I laughed.

For the record the last part I bought was off this board.

I'm 4.5 years into what looks to be a 10 year restoration on my '67S. Please forward a few names of some good shops that are slow.

    Thanks, M

Could be dwindling supply of good parts? We are limited in the years we buy/sell.

Nothing wrong with people selling parts that we need.
(I purchased a part this morning from the seller who motivated me to post this thread. Priceless! Thank you sir.)

Maybe I've got it all wrong? Perhaps members and ESR freeloaders want thousands of trinkets listed weekly?

The problem is more one of archaic site organization that functions less well given increasing traffic. This is a good problem to have; the site has become victim to its own success. This site overall operates in a classic bulletin board format, with only 5 sections, very few subsections, and a search function that is global to the entire site. The For Sale section here has no subsections, and all threads are listed sequentially with no overarching organization. The Bird has better organization overall, with the For Sale section having 7 parts subsections and (most important) a search function that is specific to the subsection one is viewing. TheSamba is similar. The 356 Registry For Sale section has no subsections, but that site sees much less traffic and again, the Search function is specific to the For Sale section rather than global for the site. This is not a complaint, but given current organization the For Sale section here has become fairly useless given its high traffic.

    That's very good info. Thanks.

So is it time to start a new site or can this one be fixed?
