    Inner fender wall plug...re-install secret?

I had to replace the battery box on drivers side front inner fender. To create access, I had to pull wiring aside, protect fuse boxes and push the fender wall electrical rubber plug out of the inner fender. I was able to do the repair with the fender still attached. Now the area is repaired and I am trying to get the plug to again "seat" in the inner fender so I can re-connect the electrical plug.
It is a very tight fit. And access is miserable. I have tried to "pull it back into seated position by threading a small eyebolt into the center of the plug and creating some pressure...but to no avail. If the wires weren't connected to the back of it I could soften the 45 year old rubber up by heating it. I am still thinking that heat may be the trick...but I don't want to damage it

    Anybody have suggestions?

Heat and silicone lube is my recipe.

Thanks Ed! It worked! Fine line between softening the rubber and cooking the rubber. Both are installed. Would have been much easier without the fenders installed. Cooler on right side was an additional challenge. Lucky for me my fingers are long, very narrow and articulate backwards. : )
