I have seen bearings where the snap ring that holds the tracks together has moved allowing the two halves to misalign.

When this happens the loose ball bearings can fall into the column and into the lower bearing.

When we replace the lower bearing we use a bearing with 2 x shields to prevent this from happening.

It is quite easy to rebuild the upper bearings with new balls and fresh grease and then re-install.

The steering wheel is used to remove the clearance and the 'steutzring' ( third photo) is used to do this job. For some reason they are often missing.

it helps to use a puller to remove the upper bearing from the column.
Who is the “we” you keep mentioning?

    Chris, is that you?

Nosism, from the Latin nos, "we", is the practice of using the pronoun "we" to refer to oneself when expressing a personal opinion.

So when you use this pronoun you're explicitly talking about yourself and not a shop? Do you own a Porsche specialty shop? If so, where is it? Thanks.

Why the 3d degree interrogation? Bill has provided excellent technical info in all his posts period, end of story.

    David,
Aren’t you the least bit curious about someone’s credentials? My questions are honest and benign. Again, Mr. Jones please feel free to PM me if you want to remain mysterious. Thanks.

Thanks again Bill for the excellent detail provided. I also have the lower placed bearing but was hoping that we didn't need to use it. Will fit the new top universal this week and if that isn't the cure then we move to the upper bearing.

    Merv,

We're betting that it's not the bearing if it's a clunk or knock. Do you hear the noise when you turn the steering lock-to-lock with the front wheels off the floor? If not, we don't think it's the upper bearing.

Me thinks it may be near the steering lock on z column, not retracting properly! Just a guess. ..... cliff

I think Mitch Leland is making an upper bushing for the earlier cars now. His bushing for the 74 and up cars works great.

Thanks Frank and Cliff. It is more of as click than a clunk (hmmm). On the floor and off. And it coincides with some slight, visible movement that can be felt in the (original) upper universal. It has a little play in one joint that seems to be the source at this stage. It is about 45degrees each side of centre in the wheel turn. Good thought about the steering lock Cliff, will check but I have been over this whole set up carefully to identify the site of the noise. I am now pretty sure that the upper universal is the culprit. It 'could' be one of the balls in the upper bearing race if not the universal.
