My '72 air box is black plastic, hard to paint and not something I'd want to bake during powder coating. Pretty sure all '72 MFI boxes are plastic, RoW Ts with carbs not sure.

If you look in a copy of the ESSES in the Registry Gear section, you will see a picture of my 1972 air box on the left. You will see that it has various molding marks on it.

This is an original, very low mile '73 911S Targa reference car at my restorer's shop. Should be the same as '72.

    Here's an old close-up of my '73....

Mine is pretty smooth on it's left side (driver's side) and textured on it's right.

It's all about the condition of the mold they were originally manufactured from.
I've seen plastic air boxes who's finish and texture look exactly like mine, and those looking completely different.... kind of the luck of the draw...

    Jens,

I take it you have a steel air box with a long snorkel...

I believe the steel air boxes were MY '70 and earlier...
I had a very early, very original '71E (3 digit VIN/Sept. '70) and it had a plastic air box...

    This thread should help:

I shoulda just looked it up, but... thanks for the link. Once again Grady Clay has provided a perfect and thorough answer. Still miss him.

    Thanks, my friend.
