1966 911 Air cleaner paint color

Can an air cleaner assembly be originally painted the special order body color. The car I am referring to is a European model.

If this is the car you appear to be considering purchasing, you're raising several additional issues.

    1. Is the air cleaner even original to the car? Many '66 Model Year cars came with Solex carburetors and many of those were converted to Webers which had a completely different air cleaner. The last Solex-carbureted engine was #903910. If this car has an engine number 903910 or less but now has Weber carburetors the air cleaner isn't even original to the car.
    2. By "special order body color" do you mean a special choice [or something claimed to be a special choice] from the Porsche colors or "Paint to Sample" meaning any color the buyer desired and presumably not one Porsche thought of? Special order colors can bring a premium but "Paint to Sample" usually brings a significant premium, but only if it's documented.

Here's the usual Porsche color brochure from 1966.

In addition, Brett Johnson's The 911 & 912 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity lists many more colors which generally weren't available in the USA:

    • 30868 Burgundy Red
    • 30736 Maroon
    • P2002 Tangerine
    • 30847 Metallic Dark Red
    • 16153 Champagne Yellow
    • R1007 Signal Yellow
    • R1012 Canary Yellow
    • 17657 Medium Ivory
    • 17656 Lido Gold
    • 62165 Golden Green
    • R6001 Signal Green
    • 62163 Leaf Green
    • R8007 Sepia Brown
    • 62109 Metallic Dark Green
    • R6016 Green Turquoise
    • 62162 Velvet Green
    • 62164 Sea Green
    • 52254 Crystal Blue
    • R5012 Pastel Blue
    • 50129 Prussian Blue Fe₄[Fe(CN)₆]₃
    • 52300 Metallic Blue
    • R5013 Ultra Blue
    • 62166 Olive
    • 80342 Cocoa Brown
    • 75741 Stone Grey
    • 75742 Light Grey
    • R7030 Cloudy Grey
    • 70192 Beige Grey
    • 95043 Black
    • 96024 Metallic Silver

One last thing, if there's an original valve clearance & firing order sticker on the air cleaner save it! The repros are not perfect. I prefer Car Bone's.

I was interrupted while posting this by a couple looking for a Porsche "project car" to work on with their son. Preferably my 356A cabriolet at a special discount. He was a good friend of Alex Manos.

Engine is before 903910, but the carbs are changed to Webers. Unfortunately, the snorkel of the air cleaner is missing.

I printed out the URLs for this forum and the 356 Registry forum (there are 29 car for sale listings on 356 Talk), plus European Collectibles and CarparcUSA. I hope he'll realize buying cars that are actually for sale is more productive than haranguing me.

    Hi
Was this just on Solex cars? I have the originals from my car, but not that one... any info would be greatly appreciated; thanks!

The obvious reason for the sticker on the snorkel is that the Solex-carbureted cars have the fuel recirculation lines for the right-side carbs running over the alternator strap. Going to Webers freed the alternator strap for a sticker. When Porsche moved stickers to this inviting real estate I don't know.
