It was groaning down the hill in 2nd. If I push the clutch in, no groan. When warm, I can hear a pronounced groan in 1st gear. Clutch is new. I jacked her up and loosened the top 19mm bolt. Blue Swepco gear oil dribbled out. The blue fluid looks newish and it was full. In any event, I’m still going to swap the fluid for new Swepco 201, check the drain plugs for debris and report back.

Mechanic wants to go on a test drive to hear the transmission groan. We looked at a disassembled 901 and the bearings are likely toast. The Swepco 201 gear fluid is new(ish) blue.

Early prognosis is 901 Input Shaft Bearing. They are prone to failure and immune to fluid change. Mechanic said I can still drive and if it fails, I will pop out of gear (if that is the issue).

GD Racing did a 901 rebuild in 2006: new synchro, gasket set, bearing and swepco gear oil. That was 40k hard miles and 13 years ago.

I highly recommend you get your mechanic to hear the groan before it becomes a scream (from you) that turns into a whimper and crying by you as you fumble with the gear shift knob frantically searching for a gear but only finding a bag of marbles inside your gearbox housing. Frankly, you could be one shift away from buying a new gearbox. Drive immediately to your mechanic and park the car until the groan is resolved. Better yet, flatbed it. Gearboxes are expensive and so are our mechanics because they fix our toys. Doing this will alleviate your worry and anxiety over this issue and it will also lighten your pocketbook, but the alternative is a nightmare.

Turns out the groan/grumble is not from the transmission (rebuilt in 2006 with all new bearings). The mechanic and I went on a test drive, then tested the alternator, then played with the throttle linkage and at 2400RPM and heard a chain slap from the right bank. I towed the car 120 miles to the builder and he took off the muffler, rear metal and chain housings. Turns out the right oil pressure fed tensioner isn’t bleeding off pressure. The left tensioner had failed as well and was easy to push down. As a result it stretched out the brand new timing chain. These carerra chain tensioners were installed back in 2004 on my stock 2.2 T motor. My neighbor has actually replaced 3 failed Carrera chain tensioners thus far. I was quite close to total destruction of a freshly rebuilt 2.2S motor. The engine is out and the builder is installing new tensioners and a chain, checking idle pullys, checking timing and should be done shortly. Phew.
