That F1 car looks like it might be a British racing green Lotus from the movie Grand Prix starring James Garner and if you haven't seen this movie please check it out

A clue was Paddy is leaning on a Mini Cooper

Does this corner of sunny Surbiton help with the marque

Pictures I posted of JYS and Paddy were in the assembly area for a tribute to Cooper on Saturday.

    https://www.coopercarcompany.com/cooper-t72

For a short while as a temporary measure between our house moves we lived in Surbiton just around the corner from the Cooper works. Ironically it used to be a police traffic depot but has now been purchased by Charles Ivey a very long established Porsche independent in SW London. My car has bills from Charles Ivey who was very active Le Mans in Porsche back in the day at their workshops in Fulham near the start line of the Oxford and Cambridge boat race start line Putney Bridge.

Don't understand why BMW /Mini didn't buy the Cooper Works building for the heritage which for a long time was in danger of being demolished but neat can get Porsche services at the old Cooper works.

In a short stretch along the A3 road heading SW out of London there was Cooper, Brabham, McLaren and Tyrell.

Bruce McLaren and pals lived in an unassuming house in Greyham Road in neighbouring New Malden on A3 edge of London having been involved with Cooper..afterwards he set up McLaren in part of an industrial tractor shed without proper floor New Malden Kingston upon Thames borders. Wellington Crescent in that Kingston suburb is now a furniture sales warehouseman.

Also jack Brabham was at Cooper's before leaving to set up Motor Racing Developments /Brabham nearby on Surbiton then Brabham Racing Developments got a new home at Weylock Works, New Haw, Surrey not too far from Brooklands and at Chessington the next junction along south off A3 from Cooper's.

Having made money Bruce McLaren married and moved his family home a little further out along A3. Muriwai was in a private estate in Walton on thames.
The team were also at various locations along A3 via colnbrook culminating in the current MTC near Woking.

I found MTC too sterile a working environment for my tastes compared to others places but it certainly has the wow factor. Gordon Murray agrees as did others like Newey who I understood redecorate his office secretly. Murray's own car business is in nearby Dunsfold not far from A3 also location of the Top Gear track used on the series for many years. Murray showed a few of us around a display of his work and he has his original office recreated there complete with draring board and pencils. He is working on a follow up to the F1 road car I hear.

Ken Tyrell's woodshed in Ockham with its links to JYS is a short distance from there near the A3 M25 junction.

For a while even the fervently patriotic Scuderia Ferrari were in the area near Guildford just up the road; deliberately setting up an F1 satelite F1 design centre in this cluster in UK secure the the technical director talent who preferred to stay on this area rather than relocate to Modena Italy.

Also little known HWM who gave Sir Stirling his first ever drive are near Brooklands Circuit also just off the A3. Simon Taylor has written a marvelous book about the latter that was launched recently. Great book for those with a real interest in the spirit of Motorsport after WW2.

    https://www.royalautomobileclub.co.u...h-event-review

Rich world class Motorsport history in this immediate area and at one time it was here folks came from all over to world to make Motorsport history -- Cooper had a pivotal role in this. Folks from Aus NZ SA etc as well as drivers from all around world looking to make their way into top end of motor racing.

Anyone staying in central London heading for Goodwood passes through this corridor of rich Motorsport history on what is a very pleasant journey through leafy Surrey & Sussex.

Sir Stirling had early success in Coopers. When Stirling had his big accident at what was his last race Goodwood he recovered on Atkinson Morley a specialist head injuries in Wimbledon just off the A3. Stirling's first and last race were Goodwood. Hospital is now in process of being converted to expensive houses and apartments of course

Cooper were an important seed that helped grow so much world class motorsport a big part of why the world leading Motorsport Valley story is now here in the UK. A magnet for top international talent. (Whenever I hear the German national anthem for all the Mercedes silver arrows recent success I feel it is a pity there isn't an anthem for Milton Keynes given the actual location of the race team factory in that area plus the nearby location of their F1 engine centre at Brixworth . Likewise Milton Keynes anthem for Red Bull racing )

The Cooper T43 of Moss won the Argentine GP in 58 and was the first F1 win for a rear engined car. Brabham and Cooper team won the F1 title following year and since then every F1 title has been win with rear engined car. McLaren started his career at Cooper -- heard that technically his first drive for cooper was a truck driver not a racecar -- and of course his life ended tragically at Goodwood while testing car bearing his own name.

Cooper and Goodwood and world-class motorsport are inextricably linked.

While it is fabulous to see pretty 250GTO in action given the extraordinary values that model commands frankly I don't really understand the valuations given to those cars when comparing from the pivotal contribution to world motorsport of sometimes ugly but usually small light and innovative Cooper moreover the enduring "flywheel of international engineering driving talent" they attracted to the small area clustered around the A3 SW of London. The value of a car or marque isn't always money ... historical contribution such as that of Cooper and those in that hotbed can be priceless to those who enjoy such things. Go figure

It is said jack Brabham and Roy Salvadori tried to buy out cooper before setting up MRD / Brabham in Surbiton in the repco facility.

I'm no expert on this history stuff just a passing interest in the history of the SW London /Surrey where I live and its links to a n interesting period in motorsport and automotive industry in which I've worked in various ways/points. Surbiton and other Surrey places not so famous as Maranelo or Stuttgart but hugely influential.

Roy Salvadori is quoted as saying "Give me Goodwood on a summer's day and you can forget the rest"...very apt for yesterday's "indian summer" sunshine together with this Cooper tribute.

    Steve

PS British racer John Fitzpatrick who tested alongside JYS also had European GT Championship success in 911 in 72 and 74 with Kremer (not just that earlier British Touring car as stated in link). He once told me at Goodwood FOS about how he was given a 73 RS by the factory following that championship win in 72 but sold it a very long time ago.

PPS spoke to Porsche Le Mans winner Richard Attwood in the Revival drivers mess who was returning hot an bothered from one race and about to go to another. Attwood was substitute for works-Cooper driver Pedro Rodríguez at the 1967 Canadian Grand Prix driving a Cooper-Maserati to 10th place but enjoyed more success in sports cars than single seaters.

Sorry for not updating the thread earlier.
At goodwood I didn't take too much fotos as I figured out there would be enough fotos online from far better quality than I could take.
Apart from that I think it's useless seeing stuff through the lens of a camera or even worse the display of a telephone when your'e able to see them directly.
We really enjoyed being there and headed off to the the tunnel on saturday late afternoon.
We are already discussing how we will attend Goodwoood in the future Flying vs. driving with a modern car vs. driving with the old car.

Next morning we took the tunnel and drove to Belgium had a very pleasant stay in Boullion with a full French dinner.

All in all we drove 6.000 kms around 85% of them on small or very small roads - some even that small that the hedges were touching the car on both sides.
The old e9 was the perfect car for the job comfy with a huge trunk but she's now showing her needs for some TLC.

I'll start with disassembly next spring hoping to be back on the road for the 2023.

Would I do it again? - definetely yes.
Travelling with an old car so different - with a 911 you'd just have to have a couple of days staying at the same place for doing the laundry.

    Cheers
    Uli
