'. . . This 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS is a factory German-market M472 Touring example originally built in April 1973 and optioned with sport seats and electric windows. The original owner was a personal friend of Alois Ruf, and in the 1980s he commissioned RUF Automobiles to modify the car with a 2.8-liter flat-six, lightweight bumpers, and revised suspension, at a reported total cost of DM 80k. The car was later imported to the United States by Bruce Harmon after passing through English dealer Geoffrey Finlay in 2000. The seller acquired it in June 2003 in Vermont and has since added approximately 15k miles. The 915 5-speed manual transaxle, Bosch mechanical fuel injection pump, and individual throttle bodies were rebuilt during the seller’s ownership, and John Esposito was commissioned in 2007 for rust repair in the doors and a repaint of the entire car. One of 185 examples finished in Grand Prix White with India Red graphics, this RS is now offered with owner’s manuals, Porsche CoA, a tool kit, some service history records, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

In addition to the motor, RUF Automobiles fitted chassis 9113601248 with a Sport (M471) rear bumper and an RSR-style front bumper to accommodate the added RSR-style center oil cooler. John Esposito, of Los Angeles, was commissioned in 2007 to repair the doors and clean up the engine bay. He then refinished the entire car in correct Grand Prix White (908). Carrera RS graphics in India Red can be seen on each rocker panel and beneath the spoiler. The seller added Hella fog lights to the horn grilles, utilizing the wiring and switch from the removed factory rear fog light. RUF Styling and R Gruppe badges are affixed to the engine grille, and photos of the Sekurit glass etchings can be seen in the gallery below.

The staggered-width 15″ Fuchs were refinished by Al Reed in 2003. The wheels are mounted with Pirelli Cinturatos tires and feature India Red spokes with anodized lips and center caps.

The interior features some M471-style lightweight interior fabrics, including Perlon carpet and rubber floor mats acquired from Carrera 6 Parts. Touring sport seats with headrests are retained and finished in black with corduroy inserts. RS door panels are equipped with leather door pulls and switches for the electric windows. RUF added the Matter bolt-in roll bar during the 1980s upgrade.

The smaller-diameter RS steering wheel is wrapped in leather, and a radio blank plate is fitted to the dash. VDO instrumentation includes a 1973 S/RS 7,200-rpm-redline tachometer and a 300-km/h speedometer. 39k kilometers (~24k miles) are shown on the five-digit odometer, and true mileage is unknown. 25k kilometers (~15,500 miles) have been added by the seller in 16 years of ownership.

An 85-liter plastic fuel tank was fitted in 2012 and is protected from below by a custom aluminum skid plate from Robert Gross. Callas Rennsport provided the front strut bar in 2004. The space-saver spare wheel is stamped April 1973, and a tool kit and jack are included.

RUF built the 2.8-liter flat-six using an M911/93 case from a 1974 911S. In 2007, TLG Auto in North Hollywood had the Bosch mechanical fuel injection pump rebuilt at Pacific Fuel Injection Services while the throttle bodies were rebuilt at Eurometrix. At the same time, new fuel lines and an alternator were installed. TLG also rebuilt the 915 gearbox in 2013 and most recently performed an oil service in March 2019.

The case is stamped *RUF28012*, reportedly marking it as the 12th 2.8-liter engine made by the German tuner. The whereabouts of the original engine for this car are unknown.

Stainless steel heat exchangers and 930 lower valve covers can be seen from below. Note also the RS-specific reinforced trailing arms. In 2003 the clutch was replaced and a lightweight flywheel was installed.

The CoA is shown above. West End Alignment installed 930-style tie rods and performed an alignment and corner balance in the 2000s. Torsion bars remain stock with 19mm bars up front and 23mm out back. RUF-branded shocks can be seen in the gallery.

Alois Ruf met the seller and viewed the car at a Dunkel Brothers swap meet in Orange County, California around 2006. Mr. Ruf reportedly mentioned that he had stitched the leather on the steering wheel himself and later sent the seller new engine bay stickers.

This RS was featured in the May 2013 publication of Excellence magazine in an article also featuring the seller’s 356 and 930 Slantnose. Documentation includes records going back to the 1990s, owners manuals, and a German-language RS supplement

Good luck Stacy. Should be interesting.
What made you decide to sell?

We’ll see if BaT folks appreciate a RUF old car.

Thanks Frank...I just think that I've owned it for a long time, I have a beautiful Bahia Red 72S, so it was a little bit of a dupe, and it was just time to move on....Plus, I have a hankering to get another modern car...say a GT2RS.....Plus I drive it a lot less then I used to, mainly because of the GT3....

Noticed it sold and from the discussion on BAT it sounded like both seller and buyer are very happy with the outcome.
I am very glad to read that the new owner is planning to drive this special car!
@Stacey: congrats with the sale - I seriously hope you won't regret this in a couple years time
