    Where were the bids for 20,30,40,50,60, etc million coming from?

    I smell something fishy.

    “13” sounded like “30”.

    13=30
    14=40
    15=50

    Etc.

    The problem was the idiot in charge of the screen.

    I interpreted it as incompetence, not malice. Result is often the same but the motive is different.

    Partly, but when the auctioneer has such a thick accent and isn't aware (after doing this for over 25 years) do doesn't spell out numbers individually or say "thir-teeeeen" really clear every once-in-awhile, it's just as much his fault.
    (and I know - because I'm also Dutch)

    New version of a Dutch Auction.

    Keep raising the price until a buyer is found.
