Anyone seen a pin (brace?) like this on a 1965-67 interior mirror

A friend and I bought a good sized hoard of early 356, 911 and 912 parts recently. It had been stored out of sight in a large attic for over 40 years. It included many NOS parts and a lot of light use used pieces since most of it was accumulated in the 70's. One of the early mirrors has a brass pin on the back. Only thing I can think of is that maybe it had a rubber cup on it that braced the mirror against the windshield?

I agree with your analysis. Probably had something on the windshield to receive and capture the pin to reduce vibration.

I once owned a '59 Alfa Spider that had a dash mounted rear view mirror. These inherently vibrated SO much that the Alfa community had to come up with a DIY fix. The mirror stood about 3/4" off the inside of the windshield, and the casting had a kind'a bullet shape in the back. SO, the combined wisdom of the community came up with an Ipana (or was it Crest) toothpaste tube cap whose big end nestled the bullet end on the back of the mirror, and it's top had an interference fit with the back of the windshield … VOILA !!!! … Cheap-ass very efficient fix...

Saw this today on a ‘66 912. I did not get a chance to ask the owner about its’ intended purpose.

Looks like it was added, not factory.
