I had some time today to look at the pedal and indeed, like Ed said, it's not resting on the return stop:

I'm also missing the rubber band on the return stop, I'll order that first. Here's a reference photo sent to me by Ed which shows the return stop with the rubber band:

Before anything can be done though, I'll have to disconnect the hand throttle because it is limiting the rod travel. Am I right that this is just a matter of slightly loosening the small screw here, so the rod can freely slide through the ring?

Yes, just loosen the screw enough to slide the stop. Looks like your hand throttle is still good,,,lucky you!

I did some further work on this, but discovered that I’m out of adjustment space for the pull rod on top of the engine (attached to the bar that connects both throttle bodies at the back of the engine). It’s now at its smallest and measures 290 mm (bell center to center). I need it to be smaller though to be able to move the bell crank on the transmission underneath the car further back to achieve maximum leverage.

Do I have a rod that’s too large?

Or is it also possible to adjust this pull rod that goes down to the transmission bell crank? I was hoping to avoid taking that out.

That picture of your pull rod shows that you already have it out and the ball socket removed. The ball socket is your adjustment. How much too long do you think it is?

No, pictured is the one that I didn’t take out (I took the picture from an online shop). Looks like this is adjustable too. I think I need a good 5mm more. Will experiment further.

It turns out that the diagonal pull rod (going down from the engine to the transmission bell crank) is also at its minimum length. I'm starting to wonder whether I have the right version of this pull rod, as there seems to be quite a number of different versions. Mine is definitely the straight version, which could be either PCG42301600 (the right one for 1972 MFI), or 91142304300 (which is for CIS from 1973.5).

Does anyone happen to know the length from end to end for one of these? Maybe you have one lying around that you can measure easily. That would be a great help!

Thanks Ed! I'll measure mine the next time the car is on a lift -- turns out this isn't easy to do on the ground.
