Thread: Accelerator linkage adjustment

On the original rubber coupler the boot was designed to slide over the coupler about halfway. When the encased couplers came out in the mid-eighties the rubber boot (which didn't change dimensions) did not easily slide over the larger new coupler. I do it by removing the coupler from the tunnel rod, holding the coupler in a vise, then using lube and a little heat force the boot over the small end of the coupler. Then screw the open coupler end onto the rod sticking out of the tunnel. The hard part is getting the 8 mm open end wrench into the boot far enough to tighten the jam nut against the coupler, using a hook tool pull the boot end over the bulkhead flange. Now everything is sealed as was intended. Looks like this latest coupler has a little recess to help hold the boot on.

    Ed,

    Thanks.

You just described what I did to get the new coupler installed. I was unable to pull the boot over the tunnel opening when laying on my back but it was easy once on a lift where I was actually able to use my arms.

    Thank you gentlemen !

So you confirm the small end (indented end) of the throttle Rod Coupling should be facing the rear of the car like this :

The mounting is correct, did you cut off part of the boot?

No I didn't but I suppose they did when rebuilding the car in Italy !!!

New OEM boot is ordered, and I will see if I can put it in place and still have a good idle rest position.

Well I guess that’s another concours point taken off of my 40 point car.

Harry it should have been a PIA to install it the way you did because you had to tighten the nut that goes inside the metal shell with the boot on it !
