    Original steering rack?

    Hello experts,
Here are some pictures of the steering rack we removed from the 300090.
There is no identification plate nor stamped date only this reference : 78 20 501 112 (7820501112)
Do you think it could be the original rack?
    Thanks,
    Philippe

Looks original to me. Strip the ugly paint off of it and you may find the tags you are looking for.

    Regards

Philippe, for many of your questions about originality, I'd suggest referring to the photos of the Edition 1965 factory 911 Workshop Manual.
The photos of this first edition were taken in late 1964.
Even of the steering rack alone, there are many photos from many different angles, installed, removed and disassembled.

just today i compared all my 64 dated steering racks...every run they did had different casting so far i have 20/64 46/64 and 52/64

non of mine looks like the one you have. but i`m also positiv that what you have is original and a very early and crude one. any date stamp?

Franz, do your steering racks have ZF plaques riveted to the housings, which are not seen in Philippe's photos?

    yes all have tags ... serial # in the 1000 (20/64) , 3000(46/64) and 7000(52/64)range
the 52/64 does have the 2nd (unused) provision for the damper and also has ZF casted in the (round lid )
the 20/64 does not have the 2nd provision for the damper.
and the gear rod is a bit different

unlike phillippes steering rack all have a, what i think is a service hole, closed with a M8 bolt.

Do you think that the tag "4 27" could correspond to the 27th week of 1964?

    Anyway no ZF tag.

both of my 20/64 racks(and the 46/64 and 52/64) have the date stamp casted in and not punched in.
