    The Ultimate 2.8 RSR Thread

    Hi

I had searched for racing results and the history of the RSR but with very little information on
early S. I was hoping to have a similar "Ultimate thread"

That being said, considering the RSR 2.8 was a one year only car the production numbers are low..

My first question, does anyone know of non factory cars that were converted to RSR specs for IMSA or Euro championships.
Similar to what we saw with the ST builds being done on numerous chassis types?

Would be great to have a thread for RSRs similar to the Ultimate ST thread.
I did notice there's not a lot of info here on those cars, which is why I've been adding my findings in my replica build thread.
I'm sure there's other cars (RSs maybe?) that were updated with (some of the) M491 options during the 1973 and 1974 seasons, but as the factory development during 1973 was focussed on the group 5 (prototype) factory cars, I know that some of the IMSA racers weren't allowed some of those modifications.
Anyway, looking forward to this! Hope and expect that people like Starkey & Hugh can add some info here.

Exactly Patrick, odd that there has not been a dedicated thread.

I'm interested in factory cars. UT I'd like to see what the "Garage racers" did in period. There must be a few converted cars. I'd really like to see there take on a M491 setup.

I do know of one car a 65 that raced as a 73 RSR then short hood in the early to mid 70's. It sold on Pelican 2008 range.

I was curious as to suspension setups. Did they simply leave the torsion set up and go with the larger 2.8

Based upon the exclusive and already lightweight Carrera RS 2.7, the RSR 2.8 was offered by Porsche from 1973. A further 80 kg was trimmed from the RS, while the nominal capacity increase of just 119 cc belied the myriad technical changes within. Bigger valves, twin-plug ignition, raised compression ratio, and extensive lightening of internal components contributed to an increase from the 210 bhp of the RS to over 300 bhp. Wider Fuchs wheels and wheel arches, as well as a low-level front air dam with integral oil cooler, gave the RSR a much more aggressive disposition.

One of just 55 RSRs constructed for the 1973 season, this example was completed in February of that year and was immediately entered to the 12 Hours of Sebring in March by its owner Grey Egerton. Entered by Far West Racing, and with sponsorship from Pharr Yarns, Castrol, and Cibie, Egerton was partnered with SCCA and Trans Am rising star Elliot Forbes-Robinson.

After qualifying a respectable 7th, they went on to finish 4th overall at the notoriously hard Florida track representing an excellent inaugural outing for the team. Next up was the Watkins Glen 6 Hours – then a round of the World Sportscar Championship. Unlike Sebring, the race featured a full complement of works 3.0-litre sports prototypes, including three Ferrari 312 PBs, two Matra MS670Bs, and two Gulf-Mirage M6s, as well as a pair of ex-works Group 5 RSRs from the Penske and Brumos teams. Qualifying 5th in class, they enjoyed another solid run to finish in 11th place overall and 3rd in class.

The last poster in Chuck's list rightly celebrates the 2.8 RSR's mighty wins at Daytona and Sebring at the start of the 1973 season. Daytona was #0328, Sebring was #0705, but the car pictured on the poster is #0727. I wrote about Peter Gregg's various RSRs - I reckon he owned or drove as many as nine - in a Classic Porsche magazine column late last year. Shameless plug over!
