    priming oil system question.

My engine has been run on a dyno, now installed into my ST project car. What is the procedure to prime the oil system if any, prior to first start up.
Car has 70S oil system, one front cooler, in the rocker lines etc. I don't want to damage this expensive engine at first attempt.

    Thanks in advance

You should be able to crank the engine with the ignition disconnected (at the distributor) to circulate the oil and see oil pressure on your gauge. Then, fire it up.

I will add to the above and pull the plugs to remove compression load on bearings & free spinning on starter as well as maybe a bit of oil in each cylinder depending on how long sense ran.

A marginal tip, why not place convection heat, up under the tank and engine for a period of time, which will assist flow.

Engine was run about 2 months ago for around 200 miles on the dyno. Another question: what is the recommended quantity of oil in the system with the front mounted cooler. ? Thank you for all the replies and tips guys.

Porsche oil pumps are incredible pieces of engineering when it comes to moving oil. Since it's been on a dyno it's already well lubricated. Peter's advice is good but you can also just fill the sump with oil and go. Oil pressure should be nearly instantaneous regardless of how you start it. Good luck.

Think it is 11 quarts to fill the entire system.

    Hi Dave
Fill the tank with about 8ltrs if the engine is empty, flick it over a few times with ign and fuel off, dont wash the bores with petrol with new engine then put another 2 to 3 ltrs in to start with, the tank will brim and drop once around the coolers.
You say front cooler,do you have engine cooler also.
My rsr racer/hillclimber is about 15ltrs with front fender cooler and large front rsr cooler and no engine cooler
As said if its been on a dyno there will be oil around it.
Then run the very best oil either motul or fuchs pro r with high ester content, worth it in the long run.
Good to hear you have it running.

Hi Paul, yes, also have the engine cooler. Hope to get this started tomorrow. Small set back after 3 supposedly restored fuel pumps were all found to not work.

New pump purchase from Porsche. Wallet has been hammered.

    Thanks all.

I’m with sithot, oil is sitting right at the pressure side pump gears. Fire it up, u get a instant slug of oil. Prime the oil system on the dyno, not necessary in the car.
