Looks correct and original...but the missing enamel devalues it quite a bit...

65-74 cars had the orange bar badge. Of the two varieties, smooth backed and pebbled backed, the later pebbled backed variety (as shown in your photo) is generally considered correct for a 1970-71 car.

So then this article must be wrong clamining the back side was smoth to early 72.
Just curious. Anyone know from which year the back side of the badges got faint dimples?

My 50k-mile, one-owner 71E had a pebble-backed badge. My one-family-owned 70S had a dimple-backed badge. My 2-owner (but one owner for 40 years) 69S has a smooth-backed badge. Probably some overlap from the factory. I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer.

I have identified 7 different variations of the orange bar badge so far. Subtle differences between them but probably consistent with replacement dies. As LiveFromNY indicates the major changes were in line with certain model years but there are other slight changes. I’ve never actually been able to pin down the dates of these changes because it’s never certain a badge is original to the car.

You may not wish to, but it would help a lot John if you had pictures of both the front and back of these three different badges on your very low mileage cars. No worries if you can’t.

    Regards

Some are pebbled on the entire backside and some are partially pebbled.
