    Engine Number Mystery

G'day everyone! I have just learned today and according to an expert Porsche mechanic; that my engine number is not original. He made this firm assumption based on the fact that the stamped numbers look crooked and irregular. Is this true? The number appears on the case of my 2 litre 911 engine which came installed in my 1968 SWB 912 Targa. Any information is greatly appreciated! Does anyone have an early original engine number for reference to see if they are indeed 'perfect' or irregular from a late 60's block? Thanks everyone!

Looks like the original font to me. Can you send a picture of the type and built number? See red arrow for location.

Here is another example with a clear build # to compare to. Your serial does look legitimate. These numbers were hand stamped and so are subject to imperfections. I have many images, and the list of build numbers, so I can generally judge the authenticity of a stamping. Please show your build # so I can add it to the list. Dave

Your numbers look legit looking to me. Why does it matter, though? It clearly didn't come with your car. By the way, it is a 68 911 engine that came in a US car with a Smog pump and mated to a Sportomatic Trans.

Thanks a lot everyone for your valuable input and information. The reason I am after this information is I want to be honest to the buyer when I sell it. I am intending to install a correct 4 cylinder engine in my 68 912 Targa. Sorry for the quality of the photo on the 'other' engine number guys!

as i read that it is a 901/17 engine which is correct for a 338 engine type (as Jim noted a 130hp sporto USA 911L) the series number at 13597 is consistent with one of the engines on Davep's excellent list of engine numbers (3380253 was 13406) so i would say 100% genuine numbers
