    Driver’s window came out of track...help!

    Ok. I’ve spent enough time in the search files. Time to come straight to the source.

    Rolling the window up has gotten somewhat difficult the last few roll ups. Tonight, when rolling the window down, the glass came out of it’s “tray”. Off comes the door panel.

    The glass slides easily up and down in it’s tracks. The The roller up sizzer mechanism seems to work fine. It seems as if there should be something that holds that glass in it’s tray. I have no idea what that might be.

    The weight of the window doesn’t seem as if that would be enough to keep it in the tray. What holds it in? Glue? The window tray sides putting pressure along the bottom of the window glass? Both? Neither? When the window is rolled down, what keeps the window coming down with the tray?

    (Also...that tray is kinda wobbly. Like I have to hold it vertical to line up vertically with the glass. Also...that **** glass won’t fit back into the tray.)


    I’ve always wondered how these things worked. But I could have done without learning and not lost sleep over it!!!

    The bottom of the window should be secured into the window lift channel which is slotted and allows the squarish plastic rollers (of sorts) that are secured to the scissor lift mechanism to move as the window is cranked up and down...hard to 'splain', but if you have a parts manual you'll see the window, its securing channel, and the window crank mechanism. Check to see if the white plastic rollers on the lift mechanism (which face towards the owner door skin) are damaged...even one broke one could release the window from the lift mechanism

    Is the glass still attached to the sheet metal pc that the scissor part connects to with the plastic rollers? This may be what you are calling a tray? I have had this happen to a couple of doors. There is a rubber pc that wraps the glass and pushes down into the channel of the "tray", at this point / age there is most likely rust & dirt in there as well. have had some with rust in the bottom of the channel to where it does not have the tension to grip the glass & rubber pc. If yes one way to go is to clean paint or Por 15 if rusted then reinstall the rubber pc (available at many glass shops) to the glass and channel with an RTV adhesive sealant on both the glass and channel. Mark / measure where the glass was located so the reassembly will be correct. A fairly easy repair.

    You probably need a replacement pivot pin (the one that holds the helper spring) in your regulator. Most do. They are available from the usual suspects. I've got a few of them, too. Your glass is held in the window channel by a piece of rubber and a bit of adhesive. A glass shop can do that for you if you don't want to do it yourself.

    New day. New attitude!!

    @mac: Yep. see the square plastic rollers and all looks good. slides as it should.

    @Jerry: Ok, this morning with less frustration and a cool hand....I found that the channel that holds up the glass is removable. Took it out. Channel in good shape. Rubber in channel is just hard and unpliant. This inside has lost it's thickness and has turned slippery due to age. You're right man, I got this.

    @ Jim: I've not taken that out (yet). Plan A: Put new rubber back in channel. Attach to window. See what it does. If it's still difficult to roll up, that's my next move. Buy a new regulator.

    You most likely don't need a new regulator. Just the pivot pin.

    Since I can't buy this rubber channel until tomorrow anyway, I went ahead and pulled the cranking mechanism out. The screws show it's definitely been out before.

    That pin looks ok to me Jim. Everything works well. Is tight fitting. The grease looks to be not all that old. That pin looks to me like it's been replaced already.

    I've lubricated every moving part. We'll see when I get it back together tomorrow.

    (and yeah, there's adhesive inside this rubber channel.

    My hope is the difficulty in cranking was due to the fact that the window was making it's way out of the channel.
