Thread: Oil Fitting Torque

    Oil Fitting Torque

65 911 engine, regarding 22x1.0 fitting with crush ring that goes in lower left side of engine case, accepts hose that runs to DS tank. Questions: Is 88 ft-lbs torque correct? Seems high! Also, does anyone use thread sealer? Appears PO used small amount of Loctite 574 at top threads only. Good/bad idea?

I agree that the recommended torque (assume factory manual?) for this 'hollow' fitting seems excessive....with a sealing ring on one side (?) and a hose fitting on the other, I'd just give them a good snug tightening (sorry, no idea what that means in ft. lbs., but more of a feel sort of thing) and check for leaks...easy enough to give another tug on the wrench if needed.

Thanks Mac -- understood, I think I can sense when the seal ring is starting to "crush." Maybe around 45 ft lbs. Would you use a sealer on threads that go into case? It's a hard fitting to reach after the heat exchanger is installed.

John - I feel the sealing ring will do the job on the engine side and the hose couplers seal very well by their design without the need for any sealant. I'm NOT an engine rebuild expert but have put together/connected many oil hoses and fittings without the need for sealant...others on this Forum may have other opinions. I understand why you want to get this right the first time because of the lack of access with the heat exchanger installed. Hopefully other thoughts will come in.

I tighten them a lot, when you go to loosen the oil hose from that fitting and it turns instead of the nut, now u risk damaging the oil return tube trying to counter hold the fitting. On fresh engines that will never be rebuilt again I also glue them in. G

Thanks G, what sealer ("glue) would you use? Orange Loctite 574 uses on cam carriers, etc?

If that aluminum washer is new, as you indicate, you can feel the point it crushes as you tighten the fitting. That's a straight thread with a sealing washer and does not require additional sealant. When installing or removing a hose, or anything else on a fitting, it should be backed up with a wrench holding the fitting in place. For a pipe thread, which this not, I'm a fan of Locktite blue.

Thanks, good advice! I have a thin profile wrench to hold the fitting in place. Regarding the pipe thread end of the smaller cam line fitting I used teflon tape. Sounds like you would go with L-blue.
