Thread: Bumper Shims ?

    Bumper Shims ?

The rear and front bumpers are suppose to have shims
    Part number 901 505 261 20 (8) required 4 rear and 2 front .
These are no longer available .......
Assume these fit between body and bumper arm mounts.
What are being used to replace these shims ? ( washers ?)
    Any photos ?

    Thanks for assistance
    Frank

You could just cut a rectangular piece of galvanized sheet metal and drill a hole to replicate the spacer 901.505.261.20 (45). If you have a washer that fits, it would probably not be an issue.

The original shims were aluminum and are fairly easy to replicate .

What thickness would you suggest? My '66 Karmann 912 never had any installed, at least by the time I got my hands on it in 1970....l

    thanks!

the thickness is determined by your bumper to body seal fit, ie. you will need to shim to fit, there is no set amount. Make several shims of maybe .050" thickness for example, and add as needed to put pressure on the bumper to body seal.

    Ed, thanks for additional info.
I know how difficult it is to get a perfect fit....I had not noticed these shims before, as I was checking for the proper bolt to body ( as they differ depending on year) and noticed this part.
Look forward to fitting bumper and seal.

    Frank.....Thanks for posting this question.

I struggled with the rear bumper-to-body and bumper-to-license panel on my '70E project. I made shims and used them between the bumper arms and body. These seemed to allow me to adjust the front to rear orientation of the rear bumpers.
However my issue, that I was not able to resolve to my satisfaction, was the left to right orientation of the bumpers. Both of my bumpers are not level with the rear tail lights and both need to be adjusted by around 1-2 deg clockwise. I tried twisting the mount arms relative to the bumper sheet metal to adjust for this but then found that the license plate panel then did not fit over the bumperette extensions. The bumpers are original to the car but the license plate panel is a replacement. In the end, I decided to let the professionals tweak this once I finished the rest of the car. I would like to go it another go if anyone can offer some suggestions
