Thanks for the pictures. They definitely help to identify the different pinion shafts. I don't have the factory Tech Specs booklet, but I do have the factory 911 workshop Manuals. Hopefully that will have the info.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi All,

I would like to have the Matra Dial Indicator Gauge that came with my VW385 kit for setting/checking pinion gear depth cleaned and calibrated. I bought this kit from the son of the deceased owner, so he didn't know the history of the gauge. Does anyone know a shop that will check, clean and calibrate these gauges?

Also, the Factory manual specifies a 0-3mm gauge for use with the VW385 tool. My Matra gauge has a 0-10mm range with 0.01mm accuracy. Is this gauge acceptable, or do I need to find a 0-3mm gauge? If so, does anyone have recommendation on an accurate gauge that will work with the VW385 tool?

    Thanks in advance.

Dennis, a 0-10 mm indicator might be too large and long to work in a VW385, but I haven't tried it.
Any quality 0-3 or 0-5 mm indicator should be fine. Here's an old 0-5 mm Zelenda in use...

I'll re-phrase that to say almost any, because I'm sure there are some with non-standard features.
The indicator should have an 8 mm mounting post that's roughly 15 mm long. The standard dial will be roughly 40 mm or 1.5" in diameter.

I tried buying the pinion depth shims at the first of the year from Porsche and they only had .20mm shim I believe. They come in .10, .15, and .20mm - the metal shims on pinion shaft to set pinion depth, did you have a source.

    Hi Jon,

    Thanks for the response.

Can you clarify what you mean by mounting post? The Matra will physically fit inside the VW385 tool and can be clamped in.

    Hi Rodger,

I have not tried to buy any yet. Sorry.

Dennis, have you tried setting the tool up with your Matra indicator?
Do you have a VW385/30 master gauge to set your tool?

I use a Mitutoyo 0-5, .01mm. Small dial that a side cover with seal will fit over. G

    Hi Jon,
I have not tried to setup the tool yet. I should have time over the upcoming holiday to try. Yes, the kit I purchased came with a VW385/30 master gauge.

    Hi Gled,

Thanks for the picture and info. I'll definitely look into that one.

    Thanks
    Dennis
