I have a one color (black fine linen) original 1966 911 tool kit bag, maybe not a one off but pretty darn rare.

Not to get into a long discussion about tool bags but I just wanted to add my bag to the discussion. It came with #300338 (Jan. '65 build). Has the two-tone, thicker vinyl and the riveted/bent tabs clasps. Pretty decent shape with the exception of the torn pull. I've been told that this is one of the rare ones. It's my understanding that the bags were supplied by the dealers so it was kind of what they had on hand??? And if anyone has a 12mm allen wrench let me know!

Beautiful, bag, Craig. And another tabbed clasp bag demonstrating the inclusion of these with the early cars.
Regarding your statement that "It's my understanding that the bags were supplied by the dealers so it was kind of what they had on hand???", it's MY understanding that the bags and tools were provided to the dealers by the factory but were not shipped inside the cars due to potential theft-during-transport concerns. They were shipped separately and were intended to to be placed in the cars by the dealers. It appears that some dealers were more meticulous about this than others leading to the occasional delivery of a later car with an earlier toolkit.
Great info. There is a thread about tools, Please please please report it here http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ontents/page24
As for the dealers putting the kits in the cars, I've no idea where this (rumor) came from; may be true I suppose but more likely I think not. I mean really ! Over all the years form 356 and then 911 do we really think the dealers (you know dealers.I mean really) were good at such things No personally, I doubt that.i bet the tool kits came with the cars, just like a TRAVEL kit if you ordered one. No matter, I digress, Again. please just copy your post and repost, otherwise it will be sidetracked, Thanks

Regardless, as always, I'll defer to Eric's knowledge and real-life experience.
Eric,
Chuck Stoddard told me years ago that tool kits, jacks, travel kits were shipped separately to dealers due to theft by various shipper personnel and kept in parts department until a car was sold. Thus, during model transition times kits could get mixed up. A “difficult” sale might not get a kit!

Yes, correct or they were kept in the Sales Manager's office typically in large envelopes with the stock number and VIN written on the outside.Chuck Stoddard told me years ago that tool kits, jacks, travel kits were shipped separately to dealers due to theft by various shipper personnel and kept in parts department until a car was sold. Good thread... wish it were in the tool thread no matter. I can believe, during some time tool kits were shipped separately BUT logically, I can not believe this was the "rule." It just makes sense that the kits came IN the Porsches with keys and other things that went with the CAR. Now, dealers may have and probably did REMOVE the kits (envelope) from time to time and store them, pulling them out to go with the car when sold...and causing confusion. The fact that they were in separate envelopes (I would expect that) does NOT mean they did not come with and in the cars. I'm not trying to getting a pissing contest AS I don't think we will ever settle on an answer and in the scheme of things really is not that important IMHO. Unless someone can come up with a dealer Rundschrieben (Sales Circular) that documents the custom--although that could have change back and forth over many years, we'll never know for sure. Again, wouldn't most all of your agree that the practice changed over the years? Thanks.
