What a Porsche owner would pick in 1928...

I am a 356 and 911 enthusiast but I like to drive cars from other periods too.
My preference is what a well healed sporting gentleman would pick, much like the Porsche owner of the 1950’s to 1970’s.

Here’s my choice for pre depression (though you have to know how to double clutch and rev match)

This example is a 1928 4.5 liter with original VdP sport touring body (many sedans have been revisited to create this LeMans look) with motorcycle fender and LeMans gas tank added in 1930 by VdP with factory documentation. So not a bitsa!

    Thumbs up

    Over here now.....

I like these as well... They dominated Le Mans from 'the mid '20's to 1930..... very cool...

Bugatti called them the worlds fastest trucks; some merit to that!

And the Bentley Boy culture was renowned!

Alas, the cost of the 8 liter development combined with the Great Depression caused them to go bankrupt so Rolls Royce - who was technically inferior at that time - bought them. Not the same since.

Here’s the ultimate 8 liter designed specifically to race LeMans though never entered. All original too.

(And why are they reorienting 90 degrees? Not because I’m in the Southern Hemisphere?!

Let's be fair... 1928 is the target year, not 1938. So no Auto Union record cars, beautiful as the were (are).

Sports cars? As pure essence Alfa's lithe and lovey 6C1500 SuperSport, or perhaps an Amilcar CGSS. And I'd take a Bugatti 37A over a British Blower Lorry any day.

Want bigger and badder? How about a Mercedes SSK? Porsche DNA!

Mercedes SSK, designed by the man himself. This one's technically a 1930 (Ralph Lauren's famous Count Trossi-bodied car) but I couldn't resist. So beautiful in black...

And not bad in white either...

I love the Alfa but that’s too late. I’ve ridden in several 8C 2900’s, and there is nothing prettier or smoother in my mind.

The SSK though is a good call as well and came on as Bentley was getting a bit dated.

However, if I could I’d chose Wolf Barnato’s famous Gurney Nutting coupe they used to think was the Blue Train (turn out the blue train was a different Bentley. Doesn’t matter, Bruce McCaw owns both.) I was fortunate enough to get a ride in the coupe and it’s spectacular. Alas, a one off.

Maybe both as one is open and the other closed. Can’t go wrong with either!

    Such elegance.
