Don, it is hard to know the true situation at the time. Certainly the new colors had to have the new codes, and several cars were built with new colors well in advance of what we consider the model year change. I think 301455 is the earliest example I know of, and there is another in the 1700's. I am not sure if I have a photo of the dash for 301455 to know if it had the old or new style. The 1700 car was found in data, and it is not known if the car still exists.
I speculate when I say that the transition from 65 to 66 was likely murky with mixed combinations of pant code, knee pad, ignition switch bezel and dash trim. For certain the RHD cars did have the old knee pad and 66xx codes. I would guess that badges with paint codes would be made up mostly as required, then VIN stamp added, so overlap should be small. We just need to get more documented cars in the transition zone.

Interior of 301455 is pretty non-original now, and sadly, no paint tag.

a photo of the end of the dash should provide clues as to the version of knee pad that fits. I do not have all my data with me on this trip.

This early 911 is no longer available as she has found a new owner & will continue to live in North America.
The car will be built into an FIA Historic Series race car and campaigned in Europe.
Time marches on and another 911 heads out to the track .....
