So Jon
BUT if there were no Mg ones what were these 901/70 to 74 transmissions and why do they appear to be different to, but the same ratios as, the 901/50 to 54 ones ?
I have at least one 901/71 recorded that seems to be Al so I am not questioning the possibility of Mg (as I had made that assumption based on the 69 year data) but there must be a reason for the two series and a physical difference somewhere.
also just sent u a PM

Could it have been that they had "reinforced Nadellas" or could either fit them
I have a photo of one like that (also has the casting number 901 301 101 0R as seems to be Al) which seems to be a 901/71

Hugh, by 68 only cars with ZF differentials would have had Nadella axles.
The close-ratio transmissions didn't have ZF diffs unless ordered at additional cost, so a standard 901/71 wouldn't have Nadella flanges.
Your 68 Kardex with the 901/72 transmission lists a Sperrdifferential as a separate installed option.

Below is the Kardex from the 68TR I had.
Gearbox was aluminium without serial or type numbers stamped on it, at the time I felt that it looked more deliberate than just being worn off i.e. fitted unstamped. It had the small 'z' on the side to indicate the LSD being present and as you know it was fitted with the thicker 'lightweight' Nadellas:

There are three 0000 options shown on these Kardex sheets. 0000 OIL COOL, 0000 VENTILAT and 0000 WITHOUT.
911T1971 translated "Sonderwunsch ausserhalb der M.Liste Nr.184 11.067" as "Special wish outside M-List No.184 11 067" in another thread.

Perhaps these options all with the same number 0000 would fall into the category of options without an option code, or M-Code, on the option list, or M-List.
The oil cooler doesn't appear on the options codes for 1969 posted by Brett Johnson.

Does anyone know when the option code for the front oil cooler first appears?

Yes, the 0000 codes are undefined options; basically a place filler within the option description.
Front oil cooler was M412 in 1970.
Jon, the 901/7x series of transmissions appeared about April 1968, and basically displaced the 5x series at that time. Rare to find without LSD, but simplified makes most sense.
I am also curious about the 901/50 and /70 series particularly, what are the serial ranges. By the pattern established by the others are these 928000x and 928010x?
Also I have a lot of 92890xx serial #'s but no 92891xx serial #'s, and no type # so far; are these custom without a type #?
I believe that if equipped with an LSD the numeral 9 appears between the type # and serial #. What the Z signifies I do not know, but seems to bear no relation to LSD.
