I wish you the best of luck with this, and I am very interested to hear how it turns out.

I have been participating in our local PCA (and other) DE events for about 20 years. I've driven the same car the entire time, my now heavily track focused '72 T. I've done pretty much everything possible to make it more capable on the track, from all of the usual suspension and brake upgrades to completely gutting it to a pretty strong hot rod 3.0 liter motor.

I was able to run with "modern" Porsches right up into the 997/987 generation, or at least most of them. Today, however, I'm nothing but a rolling chicane for the newer generations of Porsches, regardless of the skill of the driver behind their wheels. There was a massive, noticeable uptick in track capability about five to seven years ago. I've now started my downward progression through the run groups, and I still spend way too much of my time off-line with my arm out the window giving point-bys.

I see our air-cooled 911's, 944's, and the like in the same light as which the 356's stood when I first got into this. It's been a generational sea-change that has left us well and truly behind. Yet there remains a good number of us who still enjoy taking to the track with our older cars. It would be nice to have a venue in which we could still do so on a somewhat regular basis.

So, I wish you the best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

Here! Here! As an instructor with my local PCA group NOR, I fully support DE's and track events that set aside run groups for vintage cars, ie pre 89 911 and pre 89 944 is perfect, turbo or not, these cars run and play well together.

You may be aware that PCA Club Racing has a Vintage Group, which has fielded dedicated run groups at a number of PCA Club Races over the past three years. The PCA Vintage Group has very much become a club-within-a-club, with tremendous camaraderie and a very active Facebook page. Without question, running in the Vintage Group is far more fun than running in the regular run groups. Please join us!

That does sound like an awful lot of fun, Rich. Unfortunately, PCA club racing has not yet reached the Pacific Northwest. We do have a vintage racing organization - SOVREN (Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts) that, at one time, had a very strong early 911 contingent. They still have a fairly active core group but, with the rising values of these cars several years ago, many got parked or restored to original condition.

Beyond that, racing is expensive, and requires a good deal more commitment than simply participating in DE days. There is a bit more risk to the car as well. For those of us who do not wish to commit at that level, DE days are a good "half measure". It would be nice if more PCA regions would embrace "vintage DE". I think they would be surprised at just how many of us would show up.
