    Grady Clay Engine Price Inquiry

I had the pleasure of getting to know Grady before he passed away. He was a wealth of knowledge and was always very generous with his time. He'd forgotten more than I'll ever know about PORSCHE. His collection of parts spanned 356’s 904’s, 914-6’s, 911’s and even some 962 parts. Unfortunately, his collection had dwindled quite a bit from the time he was diagnosed until the two containers were purchased by another party a year or so after his death. Being in Colorado, I was fortunate to be offered some of his parts and engines. This 1980 SC engine was the first engine I bought and it has been stored since 1983 when it was taken as evidence by the Denver Police Department. Please see evidence tag from DPD as well as the tag in Grady’s own handwriting with notes about the engine! Crazy. The car was stolen and the engine # removed. On his tag, Grady states that the engine was “Dyno Tested”. I can’t imagine the car had more than 20-30K on it. The engine looked like it had been in a time-warp. An hour with some engine degreaser and a toothbrush and it looked like this! It spins freely and I even put a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders since it had been in storage for so long. I don’t know anything about it other than it sat for decades. I know it can’t be valued as a plug and play SC motor but I've got to think it’s more valuable than a tired, dirty and abused core with no history? I don’t need to hit a home run on this but I thought I’d put it out to you all first as many of you knew and cared for Grady. I appreciate any thoughts you may have. Many thanks, Sean

Sean, If I had this engine the first thing I would do is contact Denver PD and see if they might possibly still have that case information. That time period was around the time many departments began computerizing records. You might get some quality information on that engine. A crap shoot for sure. It certainly looks like it might be a great engine. Good luck all around.

John, thanks so much for the advice. I'll contact them and give it a shot. The consesus among friends of mine in town who knew Grady was that he probably bought the car crashed from the insurance company or police auction and that the thieves shaved off the engine number. What's odd is that the VIN of the car recovered is a '78SC and the engine that was recovered with the car was this '80 930/07. If you look closely you can see the Wyoming license plate number of the car on the right side of the Denver PD Evidence tag. Thanks again for your time John.

If you PM me I can put you in contact (if he wishes) with a person high up in the DPD who has access to that type of evidence info and who is a Porsche guy.
