As I have found out, My 72 T had ac installed by the dealer. The offending item as been removed. The back of the smuggler box has been removed with a precision tool (looks like a chain saw did it?)
Not real high on the priority list but will have to address this in the future. Any suggestion on repairing this area?

Same problem. I trimmed the chisel cut edges for neatness, made a cover plate from aluminum sheet and fastened it at the four corners with small screws threaded into rivet nuts. If one is less ambitious, self-tapping screws will function just as well to hold the plate in place. It seems that almost all the dealer installed A/C units share a very low level of craftsmanship or attention to detail.

1972 front trunk would be same as body color for sure. Not blacked out.
