Here is one example of a special gearbox with an otherwise normal serial #; there are several others.

examples of 901/5x gearboxes in normal gearbox serial series. These are from 1967, so before the reserved series serials for the 5x boxes
901/53 103753
901/52 104178
901/54 130972
901/54 130973
The 911 9 20xxx series appears to follow the above units in 1967; perhaps the Factory wanted to reduce confusion. I have:
20002 airfield
20006 airfield
20008

I think that the "special" numbers for these started in 1968 therefore almost by definition any earlier ones would be "regular" numbers.

20008 is 901/52 also.
As is 20004, although the kardex shows 920004 for this one but that's absolutely consistent with how the stamping goes for these boxes.

Data provided by Hugh Hodges was quite revealing. One piece was gearbox 40001 a type 901/54. This suggests that there was in fact a family of gearbox serial # for 901/5x:
911 9 901/51 100xx
911 9 901/52 200xx
911 9 901/53 300xx
911 9 901/54 400xx
So now the search begins for more of these special gearboxes. The VIN data suggests that 1967 911's with VIN's above 307600 will likely use these new serial ranges.
Now get out there and put your car on a lift, and get photos of your transmission #'s!
We need the VIN, type & serial #, plus if it is an aluminium case, get the casting date from the diff cover side of the main case.

Great info.
