Hi Scott..no hole for the door- knob at all ,just the welded oil door....so it is possible ,maybe that the upper part of the fender was one time replaced??

    thanx

I pondered that car quite a bit when it was up for sale recently. Really curious about that oil door too, I had two theory's about it. 1. since it was a late 71 maybe the factory had to use a 72 panel stamping on short notice and then just filled in the door. 2. I seem to recall some other late 71's actually had the full 72 oil door setup, so maybe this one had it but due to accident or rust repair of striker area it as reverted. Be interesting to carefully check layers of paint on that fender or oil flap compared to the other panels.

That is what i thought..early repairs to this side of the car..but it is not complete fender just the skin...
    thanx for your input
