Looking for the history of my 911 S Targa MY72 gold

    Dear 911 friends,

In June 2019 I bought my 911 S Targa MY72 (VIN: 9112310178) from a private person on Lake Constance. It was built in October 1971 and shipped to North America, US.

Now I am looking for the story of the Targas.
Here is the history I know so far from "current" back to the "past":

April 2017 to June 2019: The Targa had 2 German owners who only drove approx. 600 km together.

Spring 2017: The Targa was sold / brokered from Denmark to Boxer Motor, Dotternhausen (https://www.boxermotor.de/) in Germany. Boxer Motor carried out various work on the engine:
    - Pistons / cylinders and crankshaft / connecting rod bearings renewed.
    - Crankshaft ground to repair level
    - cylinder heads overhauled

2008-2017: In Denmark, Stelvio arranged for a "... .. several years of restoration by a Porsche specialist ..." (2008-2015, I have photos). Here is the link to the ad at the time: http://www.stelvio.dk/uk/product_det...aster&maID=329

2005-2007: Jason Cullen of Euopean Motorcars, LTD, San Jose has obviously already carried out extensive work on behalf of Stelvio as follows:
-Installation of motor MY72 instead of the existing motor MY73 with suitable MFI
    - Body restoration, paint, bare metal, completely dismantling, reassembling
    - Preparation of the interior.

2004 (?) - 2005: dmcummins purchased the Targa in Kansas City, Mo. (from RetroSC). I was in contact with dmcummins, they couldn't say much about the history of the car, only that it was running in Atlanta, GA before it got to Kansas City. He had some work done on the car but no major changes. The Targa was then sold by dmcummins to Jason Cullen / European Motorcars in October 2005: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...2-s-targa.html

2003-2004: RetroSC purchased the Targa in May 2003, according to an eBay ad. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...5-worth-2.html He wanted to restore the car, but after a correspondence with me he didn't do it and therefore sold it to dmcummins. The Targa was already black when he bought it.
In the above thread, RetroSC writes to the previous owner from Atlanta: "..this guy worked at a porsche shop for 5 years and has accumulated boxes of stuff, which he gladly unloaded on me." And continues: "The car was imported from." Italy by a military guy in the mid 80's and the PO bought it in 89. He claims there wasn't a speck of rust when he got it, but it's never been garaged in his 14 years of ownership and has developed a fair amount of surface scars. ".
As part of my correspondence with RetroSC, he recently said the following: “The guy I bought it from had it a long time, maybe 15 plus years, he got it when he worked at a Porsche mechanic to put him through college. When he was there he did a full rebuild of the motor and then proceeded to drive it 180K miles as his daily driver. It was parked outside mostly, but Atlanta isn't too hard on cars, so that's why it was mostly solid. "
    such as
"Seems like the shop was on the east coast when he did all the work, but I don't think he ever said the name, or it didn't sound familiar if I heard it."

Unfortunately, this is where the knowledge of the history of my targas ends. I have no further information on the Targa. So I'm missing around 31 years of history.
Who can help me shed light on the dark?

Can anyone remember a gold or black 911 Targa in Atlanta in the late 1990s / early 2000s?

I am grateful for every "trace" and apologize for my poor English.
    Golden greetings
    Andreas

    Andreas,

Pardon me for disturbing your request, but I met a swiss in Norway last year with a car very similar to yours. In fact I found it hard to distinguish between yours and his.

This is also an S. Love the color, looks so right on a targa.

    Best regards,

    Einar Irgens

    Greetings Einar,
no problem, I always enjoy looking at golden targas. Thank you very much for the photo.
From Switzerland to Norway is an impressive distance.
You live in a beautiful area with some very impressive salmon rivers (I was on the Stordal in 2016)!
    .... maybe I should organize a EuroEarly911sreg golden Targa meeting .......
    Golden greetings

    Thanks Andreas,

The owner was so kind to let me test drive his car, and boy, that was fun! I have a 911E myself, but with a T engine with carbs and around 150 PS. The difference is huge! I decided there and then that I must have a proper engine, preferrably with MFI :-) This winter I will have built a 9.3:1 2.7 with S/RS cams, but with carburetors, to begin with.

In the meantime I have received further information about the vehicle from Dave (davep):
Port of Entry: UA = Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro
Distributor: Porsche Audi Pacific a Division of VW Pacific, Inc., Culver City, CA
    Maybe it will help.
I would be very happy about that.

    Question Bump for history

I don't want to give up just yet to find out more about the history of my Targa. The Targa has meanwhile already had its fiftieth birthday and I still miss around 30 years to its history.
    I would appreciate any advice.
    Golden greetings

Was RetroSC not able to provide you with contact info from the eBay seller?

I talked to a “old timer” mechanic in Norcross, GA (Atlanta) but he did not recall your car. He said with, that color, he would have remembered it. Sorry.

Hi Camarilla, yes a corresponding answer would have helped me. But RetroSC (Bill Meyer) answered my question as follows: "I really don't recall much else on the previous owner and don't have any paperwork with his name. Seems like the shop was on the east coast when he did all the work, but I don't think he ever said the name, or it didn't sound familiar if I heard it.".
In this respect, unfortunately, I didn't get any further with him.
