Amazing car…
Interesting placement of 72 aux thermostat for front cooler.
Cool to see this car surface after all these years. Hopefully, the new owner will leave it 'as is' and resist the temptation to turn it into a show queen that it never was. About the only thing I see off on the car is the tires - too tall. Maybe the original size is no longer available. Most of the cars ran BF Goodrich mud & snow tires and I seem to recall there was a series contingency program where you made some money. I don't think there were any rally-specific tires being used in SCCA yet.
Most of the old pics in the auction are mine taken at the 1982 Press on Regardless in Houghton, Michigan. The rally was in November so there was always a mix of snow and mud and it was cold (probably why the oil cooler is missing in my pics). Bruno never had much luck at the POR and DNF'd that year. I think he had a mechanical fairly early on because I was disappointed to not see him come thru on a stage where we had been waiting. Thus, no action photos except those few on the 'black sands' Super Special Stage where he's driving slowly thru the crowd (shown in the auction). Of course, Buffum had Michele Mouton's ex-werks Audi quattro by then and it was really just a battle between him and Rod Millen's 4WD Mazda RX-7 anyway (on 2nd thought, I'm not sure if Millen was running the 4WD version of his RX-7 or not. Maybe it was the following year?). Nobody else had a chance as long as those 2 didn't DNF. Coincidentally, Buffum sold the Mouton quattro last year and I think it went for north of $750K.
These pics were taken on Lakeshore Dr. near College Avenue. The cars were lining up to transit down to the Super Special Stage.

Yeah, no problem. I took many more photos of the car but they've been lost over the years. Everything I have is in the auction. This is Bruno's car from 1980 or 1981, but it's a different 911. I used to know the history on these but no more This was also on the Super Special Stage on the black sands (there's a housing development there now). The black sands were tailings from the copper mining days in the late 1800s. It was like a huge beach area, except the 'sand' was black. Fun to watch the cars there since you could see the entire course.
