Thread: Fuel and oil cap differences

  1. #11
I contacted ACI with the vin for my 73S and got quite a bit of information. The original registration and plate number. And a chronological list of all the Italian owners and their registrations and plates. This was eight or nine years ago, no idea if they still do this.

For what it is worth here are mine from my Australian delivered (late June 73 built) car. It is pretty much unmolested and still has a lot of the correct date parts on it

Nothing so far Steve. Not even sure if there should be a rubber buffer, or one or two. Hope others can chime in.

Same here although I believe the first owner has added an emergency flasher plus 4 circuit breakers. The right side door frame has some marks were it looks like people had tried to steal the car. Broke the triangular door window (replaced with tinted glass). Wish I knew the whole story from the first or second Italian owner.
Famm horns on mine plus two extra in the smuggler box.

Thanks Huw. I reckon the OIL markings were only for the English spoken markets, would make sense.

I did some more 'research' and checked all my original PET copies, here the part numbers to each gas and oil cap for the F model:

    PET 1965-68
    oil cap: 644.201.271.06
    gasket: 644.201.272.06

    gas cap: 901.201.271.00
    gasket: 901.201.272.00

    PET 1969-1970-1971
    oil cap: 901.201.271.00
    gasket: 901.201.272.00

    gas cap: 901.201.271.00
    gasket: 901.201.272.00

    PET 1972 (ausgabe 71)

    oil cap: 911.207.271.00 (blau B 40 G)
    gasket: 911.207.901.00 (cork)

    gas cap: 901.201.271.00
    gasket: 901.201.272.00

    PET 1972/73
    oil cap 1972 only tank: 911.207.271.00 (blau B 40)
    gasket: 911.207.901.01 (rubber)

oil cap 1973 only tank: 911.107.072.00
    gasket: 911.201.272.00

    gas cap: 901.201.271.00
    gasket: 901.201.272.00

Basically, until MY72 both gas and oil cap are both the same, definitely no OIL stamped version then. Exception are the 356 parts for the oil cap/gasket.
Gas caps could have different stamping on the rear. BTW, the gasket for 65-73 years would be rubber?

It get's interesting in 1973 for the oil cap, different part number and start to believe this is for the single OIL marking. I have a spare 1973 oil tank sourced in the US 10 yrs ago and it has the same single OIL stamped cap.

Not to confuse things unnecessarily, but here is a picture of an oil cap often seen on the 912:

Another (late) part number I found is 911.107.072.02, double OIL marking and for G model.
