Truth be told my dream "other" car would be a Titanium/Aluminum custom 300 Merc. As I probably would be hanged for doing that to an original 300 Merc I would start with a 190SL vin plate and have fabricators start from there.

back in the early 1970's , I traded work, I hung a new nose and aluminum engine lid on a 1959 190SL. Painted it black Imron and rubbed it. For that I got my 1966 911 engine rebuilt..... The other guy got the better deal by a mile..... But i was realy impressed with the cars appointments...It has remarkable design ques of the 300SL..
I could see how you would customize it and bring its apearance even closer, and beyond.... my vote is that you go for it... would love to see what you do with it...
I’ve already done the 300SL Gullwing experience. Quite an amazing car. I would take it over a 356 on any course that wasn’t pure switchbacks, imho. Or a 911 before the 67S. (The 67S being the first 911 I think where it turned in to a serious sports car).
I would have to come into a significant fortune to build my version I have in mind. No steel. All Titanium, Aluminum, and just maybe a little carbon fiber. The only parts of the 190SL would be the vin plate and maybe a few gauges. Everything would be fabricated based on the 300. If I had to guess I would think it would cost 2 to 3 million to build it. So I’ll just have to drive it in my head.
By the way there is a 190 built to 190SLR specs on eBay at the moment. Compared to my picture of a slammed 300 it’s kind of cute.

Chris, all that eBay thing needs is a 3" drop and seriously tuned J2Z motivation! Kidding aside, a guy ran a roadsterized 190SL in HSR & SVRA for awhile. Kinda neat to see, but pretty much slow fun.
Having recently sold my CSL and with our 3.0CS currently on BaT, we've been considering new alternatives for the garage. Mercedes 500SLCs are attractive in that Teutonic way, seat four, perform admirably, and are incredible bargains.
Italian fantasies used to involve old Ferraris, but being priced out isn't the end of the dream... Lancia GTs, Maserati 3500s and certain Alfas are what we're looking at now. A CSS 1900 or Guiletta SS would be just fine...
