    A Fuchs Mystery

    Hi All,

The fuchs wheel made of forged aluminium was and still is an impressive work of art. The fuchs company was able to make much lighter and stronger wheels using forged aluminium in stead of casting techniques. I recently looked at a just restored 4,5 wheel and I noticed a variety I did not see in later wheels. As I understand the wheels are shaped like this under high pressure using some kind of press. Attached you see the wheel and the red arrows indicatie the area which is different compared to later wheels. Is this already known? Or is my wheel fake? Does anybody know if the company changed the shape of the innerside? The wheel in the picture has no numbers on them but before the restoration there were remains of red ink present.
The first 4 pictures are the restored 4,5 wheel.
Picture 5 and 6 is a 68 deep six wheel.
And picture 7 is a picture I found on the internet showing two 4,5 wheels. One with the red arrow has a straight ‘bridge’ the other one is more round shaped.

I hope de fuchs experts in this forum will help me with this. Any reaction is much appreciated.Name: A29F43CC-B01F-4B46-AF9E-2C4C8D58B976.jpg

The 68 wheels should only be 5 1/2", 6" started in 69, and to my eye those last two wheels look like cast wheels, but from that picture I'm not entirely sure.

That’s a good point. The 4,5j15 wheel is 10.5 lb, 4,75 kg. Is that the normal weight for a 4,5?

    Thank you for your thoughts

I have a pair of refurbished 4.5 x 15 wheels (only owned them since refurbished) and they also have the straighter ribs and like your wheel have no cast numbers just the fox head logo:

    Gorgeous wheels Tim,

Is it possible the fuchs company used a different design when they produced the first 4,5 wheels? The ones with the 'red ink' stamps originally or without any number after restoration?

    Looks like it.

I think this is reasonable weight for an original forged 4,5 Fuchs, although I'd have expected slightly less.

no date stamp on 4,5 x 15 Fuchs wheels.
I did checked on very early until late production 67 unrestored examples.
same even had no 4,5 x 15 stamping.
    regards

Check this thread, where it is mentioned that Fuchs did make a new batch of 4½" rims in 1970. As replacement parts. The 1970 rim in this pic seems to be the "straight rib" and ink stamped version.
