I couldn't directly compare it to a stock setup -- working from memory since I last drove the car nine months ago and the MFI pump definitely wasn't working well at that time.

It's so nice to be in this car again. Somehow, while not perfect, it feels "just right" like that very comfortable pair of shoes. I put that down to a very knowledgeable restorer back in the late 90s. It was a nice day so we took the long way home...

Two problems remain, unfortunately. After about 30 minutes, the left front suspension started creaking again. My mechanic had replaced the front anti-roll bar rubbers to combat this, but apparently this hasn't worked. It's so bad, it even creaks when you step in or out of the car. What could be the cause?

And even with all wheel bearings replaced, there remains a hissing noise while you're cruising, like a noisy bearing. Not pitched, but like white noise. The noise remains the same in neutral or when depressing the clutch. One thing is that the speedometer pick-up on the gearbox has now been replaced two times. Could it be that the speedometer cable is difficult to turn which causes the noise, and eventually the pick up to break? The speedometer itself has been tested and looks to be fine.
Your creaking noise may be the front torsion bars rubbing where they pass thru the rack support. Pull the bar part way out and see if there is a rub mark on the bar. You can do a fix by laying a small weld bead on the adjuster cap to push it just a little lower so it won't rub.

Thanks Ed, I'll pass that thought on to my mechanic. Car is scheduled to go back in March.

I'm very happy to report that the problem has been fixed! It turned out the A-arm rubbers were shot. First they just lubricated them, so the car had to go back another time to get them properly replaced. In all fairness, they did this under warranty so all's wel that ends well. The left oil line to the cam housing started to leak so they were both replaced as well.

It was a good drive home. No more creaking and finally, everything seems to work well. Maybe a full alignment / corner balance is in order at some point but for now: time to enjoy.

You have a good memory! That's why I was glad to discover and remedy it while at home.
