73S was molded vinyl. The 72 was leather and nicer. I bet Tony at Autobahn would do a nice job too.

I know this sounds like it can't really look good, but my 73.5 steering wheel plastic was horribly deteriorated crumbly, and just for kicks before wrapping it with a new cover I gave it a few coats of SEM black plastic paint to stop any crumbling, and it looked so new that I don't know if I will ever wrap it. It goes on thick like high build primer that fills low spots. I like that the wheel stays thin like OEM not beefed up with a wrap. 4k miles later it looks the same - amazing stuff!

The last picture I saw of a wheel restored at Autobahn had the same green background that Dallas custom steering wheel uses for pics. I’ve used Dallas for half a dozen wheels. It’s best if you have it painted before shipping to them and then be very specific to how you want your wheel stitched. Do those two things and you should be a happy customer.

I want to check if my wheel is correct. I have an early 73 car manufactured 7/72. The wheel is also dated 7/72 and is coded 901 347 081 10. The PET says this is for a 72 car, but I assume it was leftover and put on my car. My car is very original so I doubt it was replaced.

and also make sure they don't trim the leather on the 4 spokes too short either

Here is what was on mine. Maybe it is stitched vinyl, but it sure seems molded. Definitely not leather

    Should be part number 901 347 081 10
    Steering wheel, leather rim.

That is what ALL 73S cars were fitted with as STD unless otherwise specified.

I agree yours does not look leather but I am tipping you have not owned the car since day 1 either so it may have had a swap out.
