Did any of the early 911 race cars run 904 alloy/steel wheels?

Yes, some did. I can think of Dickie Stoop in the UK, for example, who campaigned a couple of SWB 911s using, I believe, the 5 and 6 inch alloy/steel wheels from his own 904 GTS

To return to the RHD appearance mentioned earlier, there was an early UK circuit appearance by a Porsche 911 at Snetterton in May 1966, when Paul Vestey drove an Aga blue car, registered LGK 4D, in a Marque Sports Car race. It’s likely this was the first time a 911 raced in the UK, beating the more celebrated GVB 911D by a number of months. The car went on to compete at Mugello in July of the same year - I believe that would have been an international-level race - where the final photo was taken. The car exists and is under restoration in the UK. Final photo credit Paul Vestey

Karl Egger also competed at the Grosser Preiss von Österreich on 28 August 1965 at the Zeltweg Air Base

I think that these photos are from there - it is the same car

Yes, that is the one. Here’s a photo of the very same car being inspected by one of the scrutineers in that particular event….Attachment 604438Name: IMG_5237.jpg

303178 is a good candidate for one of the earliest factory prepared competition cars as it ran the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally.

that excellence article contains some very interesting information which needs to be checked
it says that 4 factory prepared cars (apart from this one, 303178 which was to be a spare) were in the 66 Monte all supposedly built and prepared to the same spec.
I had only heard of 3 - the factory entries shown in all the reference books:

    303075 S WX 449 Proto R2 Monte car #131
    303076 S WX 450 Proto R3 Monte car #139
    303085 S WX 451 Proto R4 Monte car #57

The article suggests that car #50, also red, was prepared identically and entered by the French pairing of Perrier and du Pasquier with French registration 1722 SB 30 but no vin number is mentioned (and I dont have one in my database). If this is correct maybe it was via Sonauto?
This is a photo I had of that car

and below is a photo of the front of it from the excellent Porsches at Monte Carlo book

I could find no reference in that book to either that car or the Spanish car being werks prepared or a semi werks entry (or in any other reference book)

    probably something to research further

Juan Hernandez won the 1966 Spanish Rally Championship in a 911. Here is the entry list from Rallye Alicante' held on 24-27 February 1966, one of the events in the championship, showing that five 911s were part of the rally. Juan Hernandez drove car #21. One car, #4, apparently was destroyed by a fire during the race.
