Interesting Cliff. Both manufactured by Ohne Lόftung - Blau, with one made in Germany and yours in Western Germany. The stamping die configurations (top and bottom) are also different (My apologies to those justifiably annoyed by others with anal-retentive tendencies - either cap will effectively keep oil in the tank).

BTW - I have found sources for very nice OEL caps, but patiently hoping to find a US spec OIL cap.

Bryan, would you know if the original 1972 would have a cork gasket or rubber? I’ll look around for the one that originally came with my car in 92”. cliff

The NOS euro-spec cap Moito just sold looks like it has a rubber gasket.

Rubber. -- logical because it has to withstand friction of removal & replacement

The second is a local shop that works on my cars. He reportedly has a US spec cap somewhere in his 50-year accumulation of air-cooled parts. If you don’t mind, I would rather not share that possible source.

Regarding Cliff’s question on cork or rubber gasket. The one I bought has a cork gasket. The deformation of the gasket seems to indicate it might be original to the cap.

Thanks again. As always, I appreciate the help!

I would almost bet the one I replaced due to blowing oil on to the fender was cork. The new one pictured of my replacement rubber capped item still blows oil onto the fender. Probably has something to do with the throttle pedal!!!
