    72 Restoration Questions

Need guidance from the 72 experts

    Its my understanding that a 72 is the last year that the engine compartment was painted black;
    1) is that correct?
    2) Did they paint the engine compartment body color and then paint black over it?
    3) Is there a month in 72 production that the factory stopped painting the compartment black and left it body color or was that strictly starting with 73 MY?
    4) Any body colors that were excluded of this process / exceptions that can be verified by original owners?

What shocks should be used on a 72 Targa? I have read that Targas should use a " softer" shock to help eliminate some top squeaking.
    1) Is that accurate?
    2) what do you recommend, street driving only?

    Thanks

#1 yes, #2 yes, #3 that would be a can of worms open to endless exceptions ! #4 none that I know of.

#1 yes, altho the consensus was the more open Targa body was too flexible for stiff shocks.
#2 I would just recommend a standard Sachs or a standard green Bilstein.

    Thanks everyone.

Hinges in engine compartment and trunk- black?
    1) or should they be black in engine compartment and body color in trunk?
    2) what finish for the hinge bolts engine compartment and trunk?

The car is a 2/72 build date and have read conflicting info regarding underside of fender finish.
    1) Painted body color then black over it or just body color?
    2) should there be a spray of black paint along the bottom edge ( along edge of jack point)?

Hinges are body color for the trunk and engine lid.
Trunk bolts to the hood are silver and the flat washer is silver but the split pin lock washer is black.
The bolts to the engine lid are yellow Allen head bolts.
Wheel wells are body color black painted over.
73 was the body color wheel wells and black stripe at rockers not 72.

Scott I know things are never definitive in Porsche land as as such I offer the following and beg to disagree on engine lid bolts........

I have owned 4 x 72 cars, 2 of them same month as the posters car, one of the 2 a super original tangerine USA car never been apart.

All 4 have had silver hex head bolts attaching the engine lid to the
hinges, I just checked historical pics I have.

This aligns with the 72/73 original parts manual I have also.

I am pretty sure that at some stage in 73 they became allen head gold but not in 72 according to my experience.

Further what do you mean by split pins on the hood bolts I have never seen what i understand to be a split pin in an trunk hood to hinge bolt set up.

I have only seen the opposite on the engine lid bolts. Always Allen head. I've worked on many 70-73 survivor cars and always allen head so we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. It's very possible they used both. I meant split ring washer ( as in lock washer) not pin on the front hood.
